Over a year ago someone was selling me on the advantages of joining AFEK, but I wasn't in an F-visa position at the time, and as you might have guessed, I'm not generally fully 'in the loop' to begin with on happenings on the Peninsula.

So, I tried to join the other week but got zero response. On top of that, according to Google, all mentions of AFEK cease somewhere around last July, 2012 or so, after a group of people were upset about E-2 exceptions and donations to a 'for-profit site.'

Am I correct in concluding that AFEK disbanded and that is the reason my email wasn't processed?

In case you missed it again:

I never got a response to my membership request.

Therefore the site is essentially frozen in time for me.

Also, nobody has said a single thing about AFEK in 6 months.

These conclusions I make, they are not without merit.

Hi,

I'm the admin of AFEK (though I don't deal with memberships). It is possible that your application wasn't correctly filled out, and in that case you wouldn't have heard back from us (we get so many oddball applications that it's impossible to sort through them all and figure out which ones *may* be genuine, so we don't get in contact with people who don't fill out the application form correctly.).

Alternatively, it may be that your application was processed just fine, but you didn't log in to check (it does explain when you apply that you should log in the next day to get access).

And then there's always the case that your application was falsly flagged as spam, and the spam folder on the accounts is no longer checked after some people went ahead and signed the accounts up for all kinds of spam newsletters...

As for why AFEK are so quiet... well.. it's a case of you're damned if you don't, and if you do people threaten your family. Around the time you mentioned, a bunch of people got upset. Some were upset because they couldn't post goatse on AFEK. Others were upset because I wouldn't let them promote their 'AFEK alternative' through AFEK. And others were upset because I read posts they made on a private forum which they were using to plan ways in which they could attack the site, attack me, and attack my family.

And why were they doing this? Well... mostly because they wanted to make the 'AFEK alternative' the only option. Goatse boy is a mod on that site.

Anyway... AFEK is doing just fine! There's still a bunch of awesome information posted all the time, and a bunch of awesome people posting. Or you could join the alternative. I believe somebody already PM'd you the link Wink
