Didn't know it's gotten that bad up there. What disturbed me the most was when the father hacked up his children when the mother was at work and when she got home said, "We have meat."

http://www.examiner.com/article/korea-cannibalism-claims-famine-behind-north-korean-cannibals

..."While his wife was away on business he killed his eldest daughter and, because his son saw what he had done, he killed his son as well. When the wife came home, he offered her food, saying: 'We have meat.'...

I'm sceptical about this.

Yeah, Koreans are pretty willing to eat frogs, snakes, wild roots, etc. even when there isn't a food shortage. It's hard to believe they can't find any of these things are resorting to cannibalism.

Well cannibalism become fairly widespread during the '95 - 98' famine in the north. That comes directly from defectors who survived that period. The economic situation there has barely improved much during the intervening period, so it should hardly come as a surprise that it may be happening (or is continuing to happen) again.

Do I believe the article? Not necessarily. How in the world would this story get out??

Do I believe that N. Korea has suffered a particularly harsh winter? Of course! If it's been this cold here in the south, how much colder/snowier has it been there?

Do I believe that N. Koreans resort to cannibalism? Of course! When you've been without food for long periods of time, wouldn't you at least consider it?

Rather easily with Chinese cell phones. Several NGOs working on North Korean issues have sources that live on the North Korean side of the Chinese border. Take a look at some of the media sources specifically dedicated to North Korea. They report all the time from their sources.

The Japanese guy that released the information has a website which publishes information from citizen journalists in North Korea - http://www.asiapress.org/rimjingang/english/

You can see the original report on the recent famine and alleged cannibalism here - http://www.asiapress.org/rimjingang/english/archive/pdf/2012-2013_Hwanghae_Report_ASIAPRESS_North_Korea_Reporting_Team_V004.pdf
