How would I say "do you do shoe stretching?"? Need to get my shoes stretched slightly and I've never had to do it before in Korea. |

Can anyone recommend Korean-language news websites that aren't covered with flashing ads for facial surgery?
And thanks for the help with 자기, guys. |

They do it excellently & professionally ... but people are put off because they have to pay something. Most people are unwilling to invest in their Korean, so ...

The question about that site is why the owner spends so much time & effort developing free content. |

I wonder the same about Facebook sometimes.
No seriously, do you understand how the internet works? |

Facebook I get: self-expression & staying in touch
Koreanclass101.com I get: monetary reward for my efforts
The other possible motivations for Internet content development (like a blog) are:
-- ad revenue ('Talk to Me in Korean' has no ads)
-- fame ... (but the comments are apparently disabled, blocking any feedback/interaction)
-- future income by going commercial (??)
I can find no plausible explanation that the site has enacted which can rationalize accepting the burdens of time & expense that are entailed by taking responsibility for teaching the Korean language to anonymous netizens ("freeloaders") !
Making pages like
http://www.talktomeinkorean.com/shows/hewhocantdate2/
is not cake-walk |

talktomeinkorean has a store peddling everything they think they could possibly get away with including their lessons in a bulk download for $12 per level. they also have a sister site harukorean.com with a $6 a month subscription for korean error correction. the store is prominently displayed on their homepage and harkorean.com is linked to and mentioned all over the place, not sure how you've missed the commercial aspect of it all. |

As noted above, talktomeinkorean.com does have ads, look at the whole right side of the page - ad after ad. They even have a little link saying something like "Advertise with us". |

You might like to try http://www.sisainlive.com/
It's a more left wing newspaper compared to the quite right wing Choson Ilbo and ... i suppose most of the other papers out there.
The webpage is nice and clean, and so is the mobile phone application |

Never mind. It is just like a listing of A 이면 B means A and B.
Explained as: [동일한 명사가 반복적으로 쓰여] 지정하여 예를 드는 것마다 다 그러함을 나타낸다
그는 공부면 공무, 운동이면 운동, 못하는 것이 없다
이 식당은 갈비면 갈비, 냉면이면 냉면, 모든 음식이 맛있다.
No, I guess the author uses 는가 하면 because he's making some fancy construction with 말도 안되다.
I also mis-translated 더러 지겹다 as disgusted (should be translated as something like "sometimes wearisome/tedious"
Sorry folks! |
Very fancy korean writing, I must say, like journals that are full of long winded cr*p. Is this from a course.. or? just curious. I hope this isn't work that you've been asked to translate. |

zpeanut님!
That example I cannot remember where it is from
... Anything like a translation that's paid work, I ask on lang-8.com and get answers right away ... or use my Korean friend/translator network. Here on Dave's, it just takes too long. Like, my post here:
http://lang-8.com/59195/journals/332667824631615708496121830387701068049/%25ED%2595%25B4%25EC%2584%259D-%25EC%25A2%2580-%25EB%25B6%2580%25ED%2583%2581%25ED%2595%25B4%25EC%259A%2594%2521
Technically, all your entries on lang-8 are supposed to be your own writing, but you can sneak in a few questions, too.
I recommend http://lang-8.com/ to everybody. It really helped me, for one, to improve my writing a lot. It can help you, too, I'm sure of it! |

So 설날 is here. I've noticed though that people in my city pronounce it 설랄 (Seollal instead of Seonal). Is there a reason for this or could it be a regional dialect (I'm in Jeollanamdo)? |

설날 -> 설랄
written: 설날
pronounced: 설랄 (ㄴ -> ㄹ)
as for the question, "what does 설 mean?" ...
turns out that 설날 really came from 섣날 which was hard to pronounce so they changed that to 설날 . Here, 섣 means ... I don't know. I can only find on naver's dictionary that 섣달 means the twelfth month of the lunar year |
