Does anyone have any experience of when it gets crazy to travel during the New Year holiday in China? Feb 9-15th this year right?

Trying to plan a short excursion out of Shanghai, but am trying desperately to avoid the mass rush of humanity leading up to and after the holiday itself.

Suggestions/warnings welcomed.

I did a trip to Beijing during the Lunar New Year a few years back, maybe as many as 5 or so. We planned ahead a bit, so to be honest we didn't have that many problems, generally it was smooth sailing, although a lot of the typical tourist sites were closed for the holiday while we were there (not unexpectedly).

It was one of the best, most memorable trips of my life. At midnight on the New Year, being out in the (relatively deserted) streets of Beijing, with everyone setting off fireworks and generally making merry...it was a blast. Find yourself a good hostel where you can meet up with some fellow travelers and/or locals, as we did, and you're sure to have a great time. Happy travels.

It's already starting. I took a train out of Shanghai yesterday and it was the busiest I've ever seen the station. If you're planning on just staying in the city it'll be bearable, but trying to buy train or plane tickets will be nasty. Be prepared for a lot of restaurants, supermarkets etc. to be closed also.
Having been said many times actually on New Years Day it can be okay getting places since most people who are traveling are already at their destination.
They're predicting this CNY to be the biggest simultaneous movement of people in human history. Ouch.
