For sure there will be a travel agency in your local home-plus and e-mart stores.
There are still lots of independent agencies around as well. They can all do it.
Just look for the Hanatour, Mode-tour, etc., signs.

6 months remaining on your ARC at the time of your visa application (NOT 6 months remaining when you enter into China).
AFTER you get the visa to China is has a shelf life of 90 days (you must enter China within 90 days or the visa will expire). Your ARC validity has no relevance at that point.
The Transit visas (72 hour stay) for Beijing and Shanghai state clearly that you must enter from one destination and exit to another (are in transit).
You cannot use a return ticket (ICN - PEK- ICN) and cannot leave the vicinity of the city (you can't enter in Beijing, travel to Shanghai and then fly back to ICN .

wait... can you set what date you want to visa to start? I want to go there near the end of my contract, which would be after 90 days since I need to apply at least six months ahead of my ARC expiring... |

Here is what I am thinking.....
Could I get a 72 hour visa free in Beijing if I go from Korea - Beijing- Hong Kong and back to Korea?
Can I book separate flights? One being one way from Korea to Beijing, another being a one way from Beijing to HK? Or does it have to be a layover from one airline?
Also... if that works... can I go to the Great Wall or would that be leaving Beijing and violate the 72 hour rule?

72 hour = you need a lay over flight (ICN-PEK-HKG) with a separate ticket (as in not a return flight) HKG-ICN.
Yes, you can get to the Great Wall at that time (it is only 50km from the city).

You need to combine 1 and 2 (one ticket with a layover) otherwise they will insist that you need a "L" visa (entering as a tourist and not "in transit").

So... is my plan not possible then? Beijing is out of the way from Korea to Hong Kong, I am having a hard time finding tickets with a preplanned layover in Beijing.... is there anything else I can do?

Actually you don't need to combine any tickets. You can buy a one-way ticket from Korea to Beijing and another one-way ticket from Beijing to Hong Kong.
You can still get the 72 hour transit free visa in this situation. All you have to do is to show them that you have a ticket leaving from Beijing to Hong Kong within 72 hours of landing in Beijing. This is still considered a layover. They don't have to be on the same ticket. |

You have to ask the Chinese about that one. It came about just before the 2008 Olympics and hasn't changed since.

It was some decision by the Chinese about their Embassy in Korea issuing visas to foreigners prior to the Beijing Olympics.
Happened about 6 months before the Olympics started. I don't remember the details - 6 years ago.
