Is this series one of the most disturbing to be ever shown on television? For example. a few weeks ago, an episode depicted Hannibal kidnapping one of his adversaries from hospital who had a broken back. He then surgically removed his leg (because it was no use to him anymore), cooked it, then together they feasted on it as a kind of 'last supper' for his victim. In the same episode, another of his (Hannibal's) victims was shown hanging from a hospital ceiling by fish-hooks gutted with the entrails lying on the bed below

Other scenes in earlier programs have included a dead judge (again kidnapped by Hannibal) with the top half of his head removed, holding his surgically removed brain on
a silver tray while again suspended in a truly grotesque position, a huge crucifix-like ‘monument’ made out of the various limbs, torsos and heads of murdered victims of one serial killer. There was also a ‘color palette of corpses’ made in a grain silo from the bodies of dozens of more people all with slightly differing skin color all glued together by another serial killer.

Macabre doesn’t even come close.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of this series. I think Mads Mikkelson’s malevolently reptilian portrayal of Dr Hannibal Lector is sublime, by far outstripping every other actor whose ever played him (and yes, I’m even including Anthony Hopkins here). The series itself is beautifully acted and superbly crafted and filmed.

I just wonder how mentally healthy it is to be looking at images like these week after week, that’s all. This kind of thing seems to me a bit like porn, after a while we get bored with the usual stuff and need stronger and more extreme images to satisfy our cravings.

I've never seen it, but I just looked it up (like the "Hannibal" story and Mads Mikkelson) after reading this. So wait... this is on NBC?? American NETWORK television?? Cannibalism, etc.??

Am I missing something here? I'm interested in it, but contrary to your post, I'm worried it will be too vanilla (and even besides that, I'm reluctant to do Network TV when HBO, AMC, etc. are generally so much better.

Im a big fan of this series too, especially from the point of view of a psychiatrist. I think they've written the characters and profiles very well.

The one thing that spoils it for me personally though, is that if these kinds of psychopaths are operating in one smallish area - why do people live there? Shocked

I'm not sure what network it shows on, I just download from torrent sites. Think it might be NBC but not sure.

I dont think anybody could accuse the Hannibal series as too 'vanilla'.....lol
