This is a strange post. I had no idea where to post it so I thought here would be okay.
John Bersiford was a long time patron of Korea. He was quite well known in some circles and he has recently fell ill during a trip to China. His family is looking to offset some costs. If anyone knew John and wants to help out here is a link to where you can donate.

Not a strange post at all, F.M.J. and this forum is appropriate if not the
General Discussion forum.
Having had the privilege and pleasure of working with John the preceding
year, I would like to share what I know of this fine gentleman...
He is a highly intellegent man without the ego or arrogance. Like any
other expat, he had his faults and quirks, but I never saw or recognized
any of them as he performed his responsiblities to the best of his ability
and NEVER hesitated to help others out of genuine willingness TO help.
He personally helped me out a great deal and recommended fantastic teaching
aids and methods. He also seemed to have a love a baking, as odd as is may seem,
but as he would bring baked goodies to the office and share with everyone. It did lift spirits and plenty
of smiles beamed that lightened the mood (besides being pretty darn good)!
I've always seen him in high spirits with a wide-eyed spriteliness each and
every day and enjoyed being at work.
He trully IS a dedicated teacher in the EFL field and it is my belief he will
return eventually with the aid of friends, family and donors.
As for the details of this tragedy, there is word in the grapevine, but I will
only share what I personally know. We were employed at one of Korea's
more 'sought-after' universities at the same time and left at the same time
for personal/professional reasons. He went west to China, I went east to
the U.S., yet I believe both of our hearts remained in Korea which is why
I returned and I sincerely believe he would have done the same if he could.
If ever a man deserved a strangers kindness and/or generosity, John
certainly does...
Should his family read this, hang in there...all will be well~ |

If State is involved, then no need to donate money. |

That's a rather...bold statement. Not that I argue against it, but it would be
best backed up with further information to inform me and other posters and
expats for future emergencies. As an educator and expat (I presume) why
not explain a little more? Educate us~! |

kimchi_pizza, you're absolutely right. Subject/verb agreement is important. I generally proofread my emails and posts better. Forgive me if it was difficult to understand, but I was in shock that a guy I have known for ten years plus (and like very much) is seriously ill.
If people can spare a few dollars, I encourage them to donate to the above mentioned funding site. You need a credit card - I didn't see a PayPal button - and it only takes a few minutes.
John's a dedicated teacher, but, more importantly, a kind, friendly and generous man. I don't know what his illness is, but it sounds very serious. I hope he arrives home soon and recovers quickly. |

As today is 석가탄신일 or Buddha's Birthday, there is a relationship to this
national holy-day and to his own personal religious beliefs from what I
learned as I knew him. A day made a national holiday if not on, then very
near to the year of his birth.
In that regard, one more unadulterated word of sympathy and a thread bump
from me. |

I am bothered... a great deal...
Eslcafe netizens, help me out...
I am a vet, I served my country as best and honorably as I could. I willingly
did so. Even afterwards I did my best to serve the public interest in one form or another. Even to this day I've personally unconvered 6 landmines,
2 artillery shells, faced 3 poisonous vipers, grenades out the yin-yang, one full remains of a soldier
and the disarticulated remains of others. I report and agencies respond. Immediately.
I am pleased for that, but here is ONE LIVING person that needs to go home and this trumps all of that.
A good man I want to see go home.
I am adverse to donating money to unfamiliar pockets, but my time, energy and efforts are endless when I see a good cause. I'm writing an
essay in this regard, but to throw my hands up and 'surrender', no.can.do.
Fortitude or foolishness, what am I to do? |

John passed away two days ago back in West Virginia. His sister was with him. A memorial service will be scheduled. I'm sorry to hear this, but with the condition he was in, it's probably a blessing. John was a great guy, always a smile, and ready to talk about WVU sports. Safe journey. |
