Hello,

I am a F6 visa holder. I want to do privates. I have a few questions I hope I can get some help on.

1. I heard that I have to register to legally give private lessons. Is that true or not?

2. What is a reasonable fee I should charge for lessons?

3. Any suggestions on where to advertise? I figured posting flyers around the neighborhood, but has anyone had success posting on Korean message boards?

I am open to any suggestions you may have. Thanks for all the feedback in advance.

1) yes.
2) whatever the traffic will bear. Don't forget travel and prep time.
3) word of mouth is usually best. Flyers seldom work. Korean message boards may work for you if you can get localized enough.

Unless you can do test prep style English lessons your best bet is to stick with elementary age kids. You might be able to get some middle school students, but high school is out of the question unless you can prepare them for the SAT.

When you register with the Education Office, they will give you a sheet or some information about what you are allowed to legally charge for your privates. This amount is quite low in most cases, which is why most people don't register with the Education Office. No offense to TTom, but what the market will bear only applies to people who are going the route of not registering with the Education Office. The going rate for privates which is commonly unreported income depends on your location, and what others are getting for the same or similar services. Best way to go is to do things legally, but be prepared to charge much less than the regular people who are doing everything via cash, etc.
