"The story of a Swedish tourist who lost everything in a bar-girl swindle and lives hand-to-mouth on the streets of Bangkok because his embassy won't fly him home has drawn widespread public sympathy online....

"Mr Christer arrived in Thailand in May with his life savings of more than one million baht, hoping to settle down with an unidentified Thai woman whom he had met late last year....

"He previously visited Thailand in November last year and January this year to stay with the woman at a condominium in Soi Nana....

" 'He wants to go home but has no money because he sold everything in Sweden to come here,' Ms Pemika said. Mr Christer had tried to earn money by working as a hired hand and is reduced to begging with a tin can when he cannot make ends meet."

1 million baht is about 30k US. It sounds like he trusted this woman because he had spent time with her on previous visits. It's odd that a country like Sweden which provides free healthcare and university education at home will abandon one of its citizens abroad.

Undocumented and overstay...
It's not that his embassy won't help him...
his embassy can't help him until he deals with those issues.

By turning himself in to immigration he would be held pending his deportation and under current rules, banned from re-entering Thailand.

Sittipol Chuprajon, who runs the Mirror Foundation's "Patients on Streets" project, said he met Mr Christer on Aug 13 before his story became public and learned he (Mr Christer) did not want to be sent back to Sweden under immigration procedures because his parents had died and he had no relatives there. If picked up in Thailand, he would be held in custody for a long time pending deportation. In addition, he did not want to be blacklisted and banned from re-entering Thailand.

Guy goes on pisser with bar girl.
Blows his way through US$30k and overstays his allowed period of stay.

Faced with fines, deportation and being banned for immigration violations he resorts to sleeping on the street and begging for money.

Yup... stupidity knows no bounds.

$30k is a pittance--might have lasted a couple years if he'd lived like a pauper. What an idiot.

30 million won (1,000,000 Thai Bhat) would probably go quite far in Thailand i suppose.

Poor guy. Probably really loved that girl. Some guys wear their heart on their sleeves.

Calling the guy an idiot is pretty harsh. The guy messed up. No one here is blaming Thai culture for having the penchant for ripping off farang.

The poor guy is lonely in his old age.

45 is old age?
Not unless you come from sub-Saharan Africa.

Tourist goes to Thailand after divorce at home.
Tourist goes on pisser with bar girl.
Tourist blows his way through US$30k and overstays his allowed period of stay chasing his hooker and hoping she will help him out for "love".

Faced with fines, deportation and being banned from the country for immigration violations he resorts to sleeping on the street and begging for money.

Yup... stupidity knows no bounds.

And the stupidity of Kyopos who think they can get high and sell weed in Korea below the radar... (FYI I spent a long time in KTown.. Loads of Kyopos there smoke weed and grow it, and bring it back to Korea to sell... not that I'm saying it's wrong, but they aren't English teachers.).
