I plan on spending a few months in Thailand/Chiang Mai.

I mostly hear good things about the CELTA is Chiang Mai. Of course it is pretty much useless for Korea for improving job prospects (although it will probably still help you to be a better teacher).

For someone who plans on spending a few more years teaching/travelling Asia is the CELTA worth it? My plan is to teach the rest of my time in mainland China and to take breaks here and there in places like Thailand, Vietnam etc....

I am considering the CELTA because I want to be ENGAGED in teaching and because I want to improve my job prospects. In China I will be teaching adults.

Thanks in advance.

Why not buy/download the CELTA course book and decide for yourself.

You can learn 80% of the stuff covered in the course, just from reading it. Of course you won’t get the cert - but, if after reading it you still want to do it, go for it.

Or ask some random’s on Dave's....

I haven't done the course, but I have read several of their books. They are much better than lots of ESL 'courses'

Even if you do the course, you won’t get many observed lessons, which is the key to improving your teaching.

This is my bi-yearly serious post on Dave's, so take it for what it is. Cool

If you do the course, you will be able to look down your nose that those with 'lowly' online ESL certs and EPIK pre-orientation certs.

What's the budget for the whole thing?

A few years ago, $2,500 approx. for CELTA fees. Not including a month's stay in a local hotel and food, etc.

In all, budget $3,000 for the whole deal.

$5,000 to be on the safe side. You don't know how long it'll take you to get a job and eventually paid once you do land that job in China.

Things can go sideways, so it's best to have several thousand dollars saved up.
