I know, I know, but yesterday, my boss showed me the document and it said its an order, 명령, it said that.

He told me he would get on a blacklist or a penalty. I personally think they couldn't convince E2s they had to go, so this is another ploy to fill seats.

So, I like my boss, but I dont think this is a 명령. But I would be worried if the local hagwon whatever gave him trouble, he has been good to me. YMMV.

Ok, so, whats the deal? Can they really make trouble for our workplaces? Or us?

Why do people go to these things? I've never once been asked to attend one of these and I'm going into my 3rd year in Korea.

Go or not, it's up to you.

There is NO LEGAL REPERCUSSION for non attendance.

Your boss cannot legally fine you (it is a violation of labor law).

The hagwon association has no legal authority over you and cannot fine you any more than the local Chamber of Commerce can.

Immigration doesn't care and neither does the MOE or the POE.

I'd like to believe that but the letter is itself from the MOE.

Korea bends laws whenever they feel like it.

What do you teachers have against getting an education?

If your boss gives you an order to do something related to your job and you refuse do do it, he/she is totally within his/her rights to fire you.

Education = yes, indoctrination = no.

These are a farce.
They always have been a farce.
There is no education in them at all (well, perhaps there is... you will learn that you need an E2 to be a teacher).

If it is a job requirement then you should also expect to be paid for your time and not be out of pocket for attendance and transportation fees as well as "donating" your weekend to your employer.

And No, your boss is NOT within his/her rights to terminate you over this.
You are protected under labor law.

Above^^^^

I will not attend one of these events. Nor, have I or will I have a teacher attend one of these events.

Not to mention this one says it requires 10,000 won.

It's a total scam. Don't go. Call the

Neither the GEPIK or EPIK websites mention anything about these.

I think it is unwise to advise newbies to defy their Korean employer's instructions. It's not only about labor law. Their defiance would not be viewed well and could contribute to a variety of negetive consequences especially if the employee and employer are already on poor terms.

I agree that the employer legally can't use this as an excuse to fire somebody. But they can certainly find other reasons, and the teacher's refusal to do what they are told could be a contributing factor in termination.

A person might not get fired, but if you say no to the boss I wouldn't go into the office looking for a favor.

Its an MOE seminar.

Which is why I'm dismayed that they demand employees of private hakwons have to attend. These are not regulated by or under the influence of the MOE.

If there were any vital information that all instructors in korea needed to know surely they could just send a letter of information?
