I have Korean font installed and can access Korean websites such as Daum and Naver. I can see Korean banking websites and Korean forums. But sometimes an error pops up from Korean sites in totally garbled text. Here is an example from GMarket:

Any idea why certain Korean error messages come up as garbled when 99 percent of Korean pages load just fine?
This is on Explorer of course, the mandated browser of choice.

The encoding for the text in the error box is different than that of the main page. The encoding is basically a map that tells the browser which character to put onscreen for each character code. Next time you get it, try to change the encoding manually in the browser settings to a different Korean encoding.

Wikipedia says three common ones for Korean are KS X 1001, EUC-KR, and ISO-2022-KR. Try each of those and you'll probably be able to read the error. Don't forget to set the default back to what it was.

Since it appears to be a screencap from Windows, I'll assume you're indeed running a version of Windows.
On Control Panel, you'll find Regional and Language Settings or its equivalent. Find Advanced tab, and Language for Non-Unicode Programs menu, check if you set the setting at Korean.
Then go back to whichever app or website that you have encountered the gibberish dialog box, see if the problem persists.

Thank you both so much!
I changed the default Non-unicode programs setting in the control panel and all is fine now.
Those strange symbols come up in so many error boxes, so happy to have that fixed finally.
