I'm going. Not the Ebola places, but the nicer places. It must be cheaper now.
Mauretania, Niger, Mali and maybe Chad and North Nigeria. All muslim places but i plan to dress in that style and blend in.
2 months should be good enough to see and experience te culture.
Has anyone made the trip? |

First, you won't blend in. You can make yourself stand out less, but you'll still stick out in one way or another.
Secondly- why those countries? I say that as someone who has been to some poor, off the beaten track places (Yemen, Bangladesh).
I know a couple anthropologists who went to Mauritania and said it's the ugliest, most boring place they've been to. Senegal on the other hand? They couldn't stop raving about it.
I have a friend who worked in Mali, was thrilled when her project ended there due to the coup in 2012. Another friend worked in Burkina Faso in the Peace Corps. He said it is good for a short visit, but he got a little stir crazy after the first year.
Why not Senegal-Mali-Burkina Faso-Ghana-Ivory Coast? Life is too short to go to conflict areas such as northern Nigeria and Chad. |

Chad's army is fighting Boko Haram, who is in the NE of Nigeria.
Mali would be better, but better stick to the capital.
Al Qaida may still be operating in the north. |

Thanks for the heads up. Nigeria borderlands are hot now.
I would see Mauritania now that they are dealing with the caste-slave issue. It would be an interesting study.
Niger has a different culture altogether. Different ethnic groups and customs. I would get into the life and customs of the people.
Mali has a good culture in food and music. I would see the whole country.

Contrary to what I've said before, insect repellant is not enough, bring Malaria medication. You're probably just as likely to get killed my Malaria in Africa. |

"You Obama"
"You Harper"
Let's hope they catch all of them (Boko Haram) and drop them. |

Bangladesh because some people had raved about how friendly and social the place was. They were right.
Yemen for a few reasons, the primary of which was it was a cheap place to study Arabic. I was also curious about qat and its gun culture. I actually saw very few guns, but I did have plenty of qat.I was there in one of those rare moments of peace in the country, and thankfully was able to go anywhere w/out any problems. About a year later, the Houthi started their rebellion in the north. I don't think I'd feel comfortable visiting the country now sadly. Sanaa is a fantastic city for the eyes (but also quite dull socially and provincial). |

I've known a few Bangladeshis, they seem more into skin color issues and caste. I wonder is you saw any of that there.
Yemen does seem like a cool place. |

Caste? Bangladesh is almost entirely sunni muslim. Do you just mean social class? And no, there really wasn't anything about skin color issues. |
