|
|
My friend and I have been planning on going to a Southeast Asian country. We were thinking Thailand, Cambodia, or maybe even the Philippines.
If any of you have been to any of these places and have recommendations on places to visit or things to do, it would greatly be appreciated.
We were told that Phuket is nice, but nothing more than that. Please share some of the experiences! |

Everything you wanted to know about everywhere in SE Asia.
Not too much has changed over the last 15 years (that the archives cover).

Way too vague. How much time do you have? What are you interested in? Have you been to the region before? have you traveled to developing countries before? What's your budget? |

What's the bst place or best beach to visit in SE Asia or some of the best? You know in winter, say January or February? A place with clear blue skies, not too humid (at least in winter). |

You can easily do three or more jumps around Thailand and then hit Cambodia. Koh Chang, Koh Samui (and the other outer islands), Phuket, Koh Semet, hell, even Pattaya on the way back to Bangkok (or a first place to hit on the way out). Depends on how you plan, how much time you have, and whether or not you'll be flying around or taking public xport (relatively easy to do there).
Beaches are great, but when is the next time you'll be close to something as cool as Angkor Wat (You can spend a week no problem just in the cool little town there, Siem Reap). Shihanoukville, Cambodia's only beach town, is also fantastic, kind of like going to Thailand only 20 years ago. Starting to get better known now, though, especially among the Russians.
Philippines? Boracay hands down if you want beaches. Or you could hit Sebu and then take the power boat over to one of the outliers. Very chill.
Some like Vietnam. Personally not my favorite, but there's a lot of country to see and some nice places, both on the beach and inland.
Bali is great, and there are a few different spots to hit in terms of beaches and inland areas as well as other islands to explore. |

I hear there are some up-and-coming islands in the South China Sea. |

Thailand, on the Phuket/Krabi side. Don't know about the Philippines that time of year, but maybe there too.
NOT Indonesia that time of year, nor the east side of the Malaysian peninsula. That's monsoon season for them.

When were you there? I thought it was the most overrated place in SEast Asia. Awful traffic in many spots, people everywhere, and sky high prices (compared to the rest of Indonesia, not so bad compared to the developed world). I'd recommend Lombok, Sulawesi, and Java (but not for its beaches) over Bali... |

Winter before last. Monsoons there, so there was some rain, but after Xmas/New Years passed, it wasn't too crazy at all. Plus, if you get away from Kuta, it's pretty chill.
But expensive? We had a condo for 350 a month. Then switched to a different beach and had an entire 1 story home, new, for 33.00 bucks a night.
Drinks were a bit higher than elsewhere we've been in SE Asia, but that's Indonesia. Stick to beer and you're Ok. If you want to drink, go to Thailand.
Also highly recommend Lombok. Give Guilly T a pass...they've recently put a mosque right smack in the middle. |

For Laos, and Cambodia you have to go to Thailand first anyway. Beer in Laos is fairly cheap and Beer Lao is the best beer you can buy. Yogyakarta in Indonesia is a fairly nice place to be. If you go to Indonesia the visa is roughly 30 US for a month and 60 US for two months. For Indonesia Bring crisp new US currency, unfolded large and small bills or deal with the extortion especially at immigration which takes nothing else. Money changers will give you fewer Rupiahs if the bills are old, even though banks in the US don't care, which is where the bills eventually go back to. Just another rip off you find in Indonesia. |

We traveled through most of Vietnam first, then went overland into Cambodia. No graft to deal with. Pain in the arse, but no graft.
Or you can just take a flight into Phnom Penh. i don't know why you'd think you HAVE to go through Thailand. |

Roughly? The price is in USD, and it is $35. An extension of 30 days is also the same price.
Regardless, as of this Spring, most western visitors now don't have to pay for a visa for stays up to 30 days.

I like the Philippines. Been there a few times and love that the locals are very friendly and speak good English so easy to connect. Great beaches and nature too of course |
