I read online that as of sometime in July 2017 Korea stopped testing foreign teachers coming in on an E-2 visa. They'll be tested for syphilis and some other things, but not HIV.

True?

And, if true, does the Korean government have another way of skinning that cat? Do they test you as part of getting the national health insurance?

Yes, I'm positive.

The MOE still tests you, but they test everyone, even Koreans. So, if you change jobs, you'll have to get another HIV test and you have to cover the costs now.

Thanks "nicwr2002".

I wonder if you happen to know: Does the MOE (Ministry of Education) do testing on those who will teach in the school system only? Or, do they test for HIV those teaching for something like a private "hagwon" as well?

I just prefer not to have to share my status with any government agency.

I've done a year in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, all without being required to give up my HIV status.

Any place that is allowed to hire an E2 or is under the jurisdiction of the MOE (including hagwons).

If you are teaching anyone underage, then the MOE will be testing you for drugs and infectious diseases. It's not just HIV, they test for like 3 other types of STDs that I don't remember off the top of my head. However, with that you also get a physical. They test your hearing, blood pressure, vision, white blood cell count, x-ray for your lungs, and they hook you up to an EKG machine to test your heart. Plus you get a consultation with a doctor. I had to pay $50 for the test.
