Well, it's natural to eat meat if your born into a meateating family and a culture that promotes the meat industry.

It's also natural to transmigrate to an animal body and be slaughtered for all the karma we generate by being implicated in so much unnecessary killing.

Because the human form of life is more important than lower forms of life we can kill animals when necessary, but by nature's law (set up by an infinitely intelligent sentient Being) there is always a reaction to unnecessary killing.

Slaughterhouses are not necessary because humans can get all the nutrition - and good taste - they need from combinations of grains, fruit, vegetables. milk products, nuts, beans (and whatever I forgot to list...)

There's no reaction to meat-eating per se - just the killing - so animals can be eaten after they die naturally.

The Seoul Veggie Club has two events scheduled for this weekend.

On Saturday, May 2 members interested in hiking up (and down) Achasan Mountain will meet at Achasan Station (line 5) exit 3 at 4pm.

After the hike - whether or not that's washed-out by rain - members (and anyone else interested in joining) will meet at "Go5" (O Seh gae hyang) Vegetarian Buffet at around 6:30pm. It's located right in front of exit 1 of Achasan Station.

On Sunday, May 3, the SVC will be gathering for a "Veggie Pot-luck" picnic in Yongsan Park at 2pm.
Here are directions for getting there (given by "kermo" who goes by a different alias as club president)

Go out Ichon Station exit 2 (#4 line--light blue), go straight (across the intersection) toward the museum. There's a Reflecting Pond. Follow the signs toward the "Reflecting Pond Cafe" until you see a little stone path leading to the right.

We'll be in a clearing, near the Buddha statues, getting our food on.

People are requested to bring some vegetarian or vegan items to share.

More info can be found at the Seoul Veggie Club site on facebook.

The forecast now calls for some heavy rain for Saturday, so the hiking event will probably just be for very hardy souls - however, the vegetarian buffet gig scheduled for 6:30 at Achasan Station (purple line 5, exit 1 - can't miss it) can go on as planned (I assume).

Sunday's forecast for the picnic at Yonsan Park (light blue line 4, Ichon station, exit 2) for 2pm still looks pretty good...

Anyone interested in attending the picnic at Yonsan Park on Sunday can also conveniently check out the Egyptian mummy exhibit at the National Museum of Korea - which is right next to Yonsan Park.

The Seoul Veggie Club mainly organizes its events on Facebook, and emails are sent out to anyone who wants to be on their mailing list.

It's not necessary to be a member - or even vegetarian (as long as you have some positive interest in checking it out) in order to come to a scheduled gathering. Just show up.

You could also pm me (or "oni") or maybe even "kermo" (club prez on long hiatus) to get on the mailing list.

Usually they meet at a restaurant or vegetarian/vegan buffet every couple weeks, and sometimes there's a picnic in a park or a vegetarian dinner at some members (large) apartment.

Here's a link to their Facebook site - click on "Upcoming Events"
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=11299200065

Events are generally on the weekends, but there's a dinner-show at the famous Sanchon Mountain Village restaurant in Insadong this Wednesday evening.

This Saturday there's a gathering at "Loving Hut" vegetarian/vegan buffet at Achasan Station (green line 2) exit 1 at 6pm)

In a couple weeks (September 26) there is scheduled to be a veggie picnic at Seoul Forest Park at 3pm.

I just found out that there are now 38 "Loving Hut" vegetarian/strictly vegan restaurants in Korea.

Here's a location map ...
http://www.lovinghutcuisine.com/locator.asp

And here's another listing of them ...
http://suprememastertv.com/loving-hut/

Although they are affiliated with a meditational cult (and it's pet-loving "Supreme Master"), their restaurants are generally very good, and there is no pressure to try their system of meditation.

The Seventh Day Adventists also run a good number vegetarian/vegan buffet restaurants around Korea, but it's hard to find a current listing of them as a group. The most well known is probably "New Start", and its location and directions for getting there are included in this blog I just stumbled upon ...

Anyone interested in checking out a reportedly very healthy restaurant for lunch this Saturday (June 19, 12:30 pm) is welcome to join the Seoul Veggie Club's gathering at Dimibang in Insadong.

Here are details of the event as posted by its (Korean-American woman) organizer ...

Im delighted to introduce this restaurant called Dimibang in Insadong. Its specialty is medicinal mountain and sea veggies. You will be surprised to see that it actually tastes better than it sounds. The food was excellent. This restaurant is owned by a well-known Korean author, Che Jingyue, in the field of study. You will experience assorted dishes prepared with some unusual plants gathered in the mountains. Most of their dishes are vegetables but they are going to prepare a strictly vegetarian menu for our group which excludes animal products in the soup stock, etc. The price is 10.000W.

Your set menu includes:
* Mistletoe Medicinal Rice: cooked with multi-grains, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dates, ginkgo nuts, Korean angelica root, and black beans.
* Marine algae salad: includes a sea vegetable called hamcho in Korean that has high mineral and enzyme contents.
* 6 other assorted vegetarian dishes.

Direction:
Get off line3 at Anguk station (station #328), exit 6. Walk straight until it curves toward the main Insadong street at the corner of Crown Bakery. On your left-hand side, take left at the second alley called Insadong 3 gil (look for the English street sign.) Turn left at the end of the alley (you should see Sin Gung Jang Motel.) Its the 2nd building on your left. Its called Dimibang. It will be a 5-10 minutes walk from the subway exit.

So far, 15 people have confirmed that they'll be attending. Facebook users can check it out on the "Seoul Veggie Club" website.

If you want to attend without going through Facebook, post it here or send me a pm - or just show up at the event by 12:30 and join us.

The Seoul Veggie Club is still going strong on Facebook. Recently, a couple members were interviewed on a Seoul radio station and related their experiences being vegetarian or vegan in Korea. https://www.facebook.com/groups/seoulveggieclub/

In my comment, I linked back to the early pages of this thread to give newer members an idea of the club's historical origins. Unlike the first several years, when bi-weekly events tried to accommodate all types of vegetarians, Veggie Club events these days seem to be organized exclusively for vegans.

Are there more vegetarian restaurants and stores now?

Unfortunately, some really good restaurants listed earlier on this thread are no longer in business, but I'm sure (even though I'm no longer in Korea) that some new (vegetarian/vegan/veggie-friendly) ones have opened up. There is a vegetarian map on the Seoul Veggie Club website (somewhere) that hopefully has been updated regularly.

This Happy Cow listing for Seoul lists some of the most popular ones:
