My year3s are doing a unit on personal advice. peer pressure, dating etc.
While they don't like to sing they do love to listen to music and I was going to do a listening comprehension today on I heard it through the grapevine, except my computer speakers are stuffed. So I just talked them through it.
But I need some new songs that talk about teenage agnst that are recent but are still strictly g rated. |

"Smells like teen spirit" is a great one, but perhaps not so good for the kids sensibilities here. I used to throw caution to the wind and use any songs I wanted that, of course, were fairly tame lyrically. I taught "God save the queen", "Anarchy in the UK" by the Sx Pistols, "Saturday Morning" by the Eels for my young classes (no angst, just cute), Avril Lavigne "Complicated", "Sk8ter Boi (man I hate that song!), early Alanis Morrisette....augh! I am not at home now...I used a lot of music in the class, but I didn't like a lot of it and therefore the names elude me. I will post back when I get home. |

Thanks for the help I played the marvin gaye version of the grapevine to my 2nd year after school class and they really liked it.
But I'm looking for something a bit more contempory for this one.
I thought about...
Uptown girl (westlife)
Parents just don't understand... I listened to it last night and it sounds really dated but not in a good way.
Avril levine
Teenage dirtbag would have been great but there is swearing in it.... argh! |

I used a song with one swear in it...I changed the word in the song (I know it's wrong) for their handouts, and coughed at the right moment. No problem. |

Why don't you do Summer Nights from Grease That song is full of peer pressure and personal issues. Why Uptown Girl by westlife??? Shouldn't you be doing Billy Joel???? |

because my students love westlife.... I thought about summer nights but that was also a bit dicey and I want something within the lst 10-15 years...although the theme from the breakfast club is sounding good. |

Men without Hats.
The lyrics are usually so simple and repetitive that they are perfect for use in an EFL setting.
or
Roxette, you can use some of the less explicit songs and some students might even recognize a tune or 2.
If you want to really get them interested though, there's nothing like finding out what goups/singers they are interested in. If you can, ask your students who they like, who is popular etc. (if you're lucky, they may give you a useful name or 2)
I'm not saying this will always work, sometimes it backfires ...if they just happen to like Marilyn Manson for instance, but it may give you some more ideas as to what they might like to use in class. |

Last year for Christmas, I was bored with the traditional Carols so I taught them "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas", a Muppets song, and "All I Want for Christmas is MORE MORE MORE" by Daffy Duck. They really loved it and they are hillarious songs.
These won't help you now but they are examples of what kids like. If you make it interesting and fun, they will love it.

I just finished doing a listen comprehension section with music, and one of the songs I used that the kids like was Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River". Its got that ballad like sound that the kids like, and they love the fact it's by Britney Spears Ex. No bad words, no direct sex talk, very G. It is also good to teach them a few expressions. Taught a whole class simply be ripping out some of the expressions used (cry me a river, burning your bridges, messed with my head, world came crashing down, etc.) and the kids got into it.
Be warned though: This does mean you have to listen to this song at least three times with every class you have. I HAVE LISTENED TO THIS SONG 60 TIMES THIS WEEK. Thank God soju blocks out the pain... |

I use to do this quite often, I used Billy Joel Piano Man (ok), Elton John Rocket Man (ok) If I had a million dollars (good) and American Pie (the song not the movie, good). Good luck. |

I was thinking of spending almost a whole class on a couple songs... bad idea? Get them to listen, play it again with them asking questions about the words, play it part by part and get them to write the words out... I think the songs should sell themselves.
Your thoughts?
Haha I like Cry Me a River alot, I admit. Listening to it now. |
