|
|
I was just wondering what happens when a person overstays a visitor's visa (US passport holders get 90days) for less than a month. I've heard that it is really really expensive, but then heard that its basically a 100,000 won fine from many different people.
I checked the US embassy website, but it only adds to my confusion. They say that it is really expensive, yet says that its typically 100,000 won for less than a month. I don't think the $85USD fine is a whopping figure. You guys have any clue??
PS The US embassy is hard as hell to get a hold of..... I've tried like 3 days in a row. |

I guess, due to the lack of replies, there's nobody in k right now who has ever overstayed (who'd want to anyway, hau), but this tells me that if you do, they're not letting you back in.. I knew someone who left a day late without any fine. Try consulting the lonely planet korea, I'm sure i read the penalty in there somewhere. Alternatively, telephone immigration (visa section) anonymously- they have an english speaking staff who'll tell you- they helped me out with some details once before.
Embassies? absolutely good for nothing... |

yeah,
Korea's got a very stiff fine for overstaying your visa... however from memory you can apply to have it extended my advice would be along the lines of rapier consult immigration and lonely planet before it becomes a very big problem as like credit cards the longer you do nothing about it the worse it will get.

I have overstayed my visa. I called Mok-dong immigration in Seoul and they told me I had 14 days to leave after my visa was cancelled or expired. I called 3 times on 3 days...they tend to give you different answers depending on who you speak to....
So I ended up getting my airline ticket booked 2 days after my visa ran out...and all hell broke loose at the airport...blah blah Canada saram blah blah overstay....I was hauled into some room where some yelled at me. I told him that Mok-dong gave me that information. He told me that I was going on record and that it was a 100,000 fine. So I went into another office, where I explained to the translator the information I got. I told them their own people are lying to foreigners to get money from us when we leave. I was angry but not surprised. So they photocopied my passport and no fine. Don't yell or scream but use the facts and perhaps their own incompetence against them.
A friend overstayed by 10 days and wasn't fined either. I think it just depends and how close it is to your flight time. I had to run to catch my plane out...as did he. |
