So much talk about business...hmmm

So much ant-Korean sentiment .hmmmmmmmm

Why are you still there teaching the KKKoreans English then ?

Business..............hmmmmmmmmmm

If people with integrity did the right thing and stopped teaching them and left because they were sick of listening to that NON STOP Racist diatribe coming out of the koreans mouths every day - they MIGHT change their ways.
You stay there teaching and banking their money , they'll continue to look down on westerners.

CHALLENGE THEM IF YOU ARE GOING TO STAY ...instead of working in their hagwons like grateful little mice .

It would be interesting to see how North Korea will react. Good move Mr. Donald Rumsfelt!

yeah, he had so much backbone back in the Vietnam War that he got a cushy position with the TX National Guard and went AWOL for a lot of that time. Wow, lots of backbone there. Rolling Eyes I know, I know, at least he "served" as opposed to his predecessor. But no one's claiming Bill C. had a backbone Smile .

What exactly is this backbone of his? Standing up to Saddam? Please, give me a break. Sending troops off to war doesn' t give one a backbone. standing up for yourself is; and the war in iraq was anything but standing up for the United States.

If that's the case, Mr. bum, then why doesn't South Korea, a sovereign nation, simply expel the U.S. forces from its soil? It would seem to be a very easy solution to a vexing problem for many Koreans and a percentage of foreign wage earners in South Korea who resent being protected by the U.S. military?

Were that to occur, I doubt there would be many tears shed by the departing U.S. military or their friends, relatives and loved ones in the U.S. Excluding tears of joy, of course.

If South Korea no longer needs to be in a protector type of relationship, then why is it?

A truly vexing question. Don't you agree?

In economics its referred to as the free rider system. If you dont have to pay for something dont.As long as there is some perceived benefit ie.defense they will always take it.I felt and feel that our troops are like the pet dog sometimes paraded ie today we have a festival we would love to have the Marine Band, sometimes used hey let the Americans sit up on the DMZ while our wonderful kids get deferment and go to University and sometimes resented those Americans murdered our children.

Until we get our act together and until we do we should Get Out.Those two kids over there should have never been run over by a tracked vehicle. But that tracked vehicle should have had a Korean escort vehicle with blue flashing lights,a kind of pace car as its eyes and ears.Thats how they do it here when moving heavy equipment off the military reservation.

The lack of responsibility by our governments is sad.

We put our troops who are fellow Americans out there though to suck up that abuse and its not right to send nineteen year olds into that kind of fray.In law they have a term referred to as undue influence and the government and the military are guilty of using undue influence to sucker them into this kind of duty. What are we there for?Do we need to subject OUR people to this b/s?

Its scary to see Halliburton (Dick Cheneys former company)first at the trough of Iraqi contracts but still no WMDs found.I supported this war too but I beginning to feel used.I think and have thought Korea is the same.

Yes, the US should let the Korean take care of themselves. The South has the money and resouces to out do North Korea in an arms contest. The folks back home have no interest in protecting an ungrateful nation. It's only the Multinational corporations that like the security of US protection at the most armed border in the world. It gives the stockholders some comfort.

A war in any case would be extremly costly in terms of lives and livlihood. So perhaps diplomacy is a better method. If only Evil or Very Mad Kim Jong Ill, would keep his word and Twisted Evil Bush wasn't so self-righteous. Where are the wise leaders?

We all know the answer to that. SK does not want to pay for it. USFK costs the US taxpayer $4bn a year net.

This year Korea was faced with a choice on USFK, stay or go. Korea chose that it stay. The US has wanted to reduce their military presence in Korea for many years. Last year's events provided the reason for troop reductions.

The Koreans are crapping in their hanboks over it but there is no way the US is ever going to take the crap it did last year from Korea again. There is also no way the US will allow Korea courts to preside over show trials of its people.

I am very, very sure these points have been made very clear to Korea's leaders.

ummmm I dont think so dude, first of all most of the cmpanies you mentioned are in serious financial problems, and need the help of the WTO to sell in other countries, ESPECIALLY America!!
korea needs America way too much more than America needs korea!

if America packed up and left korea would go through a serious financial crash, foreigner investors from all over the world will pull out this economy... then korea would not afford very much they would seriously make the people pay ridiculous taxes then BLAME AMERICA for ditching them! hahahah funny that..

most korean companies DAEWOO, KIA, divisons of those companies have been sold to american companies, and in the next 25 years we will see more foeign companies owning the big businesses in korea..

Thank you, Canadian Teacher. I thought that might be part of the answer.

Yes, the state of affairs has been made very clear to them. It was long overdue.

The upcoming demonstration season will show the world and the American public and administration how clearly the message has gotten through.

There is one thing for sure, and that is that the Americans have clearly gotten the message. Again, long overdue.

What is broadcast back home from the demonstration season will affect both Americans and Koreans alike. In different ways, as they say. It's possible one group may be affected more than the other. Time will tell.

I find foreign affairs fascinating. Don't you?

Not so. The land, and all other land that USFK uses, is owned by the ROK or individual land owners who are in turn paid rent for its use. The owners have in fact made a killing on this rent for years and are the ones most voiciferously opposing the pullback of 2ID.

Yongsan has been a base since Japanese times and is owned by the city of Seoul.

The expense to Korea of moving USFK out of Yongsan is the aquisition of additional land in Pyongtek and Osan. Korea's "NGO's (in reality they are nothing but a front for the Dear Leader) are gearing up to oppose the new property aqusition tooth and nail. If there is too much nonsense I think we will see all ground troops out of Korea pretty quickly.

I have been watching the Korean media very closely and I do not see much going on in regards to anti-foreignerism (and that is what anti-Americanism in Korea really is). My Korean friends are quite frankly sick to death of protests and protestors and want to see such silliness dealt with harshly. They are not stupid and realise that Korea's economic woes at the moment were a direct result of last year's antics.

Koreans never for one second ever thought USFK would leave.

Now they know.

My brother who served US army once told me Korean military depends on US military for 99% of military intelligence information, and 70% of air force. It is only in ground force the Korean military is barely self-sufficient, thanks to the massive number of conscripted soliders.

As for the importance of Korean economy to the world, my impression is the world can survive without South Korea, while South Korea is desperately in need of trading partners, as Itaewon Guy put it.

It will be truly interesting to see how South Koreans fend for themselves, when they are left out in the cold.

America will never leave as long as their is a threat, nor does Korea want them to leave. It's bad for business. If Korea were ever taken by the North, which it won't be, it would send a tidal wave through the global economy. Although not as economically important as Japan, these people are quite the producers.

Take a course in economics. You might learn something.

You're right...I'd like to add to this...

The USA keeps many people working by having troops in Korea... The military personnel, government agencies, government contractors, defense contractors back in the US all need the miltary presence in Korea to keep getting paychecks... War or more accurately, the threat of war is good business...

To say that the US is here to "protect freedom" is ridiculous... They could care less about protecting freedom... If the USA really cared about freedom they could go to Africa where there are plenty of conflicts of murderous dictators killing innocent civilians... The USA won't go there because there's no ecnomic interest in Africa...
