Interesting how probably one person who sold the photos to the tabliod causes every Left-Wing wacko to go off the deep end, declaring how evil the US is, and how it's no different than Saddam was.

OOOH! this is so humiliating, The Butcher of Bagdad in his tighty whiteys...SO THE F WHAT? It was laundry day and he had nothing clean.

Is this more evil than hanging the charred corpses from a bridge? Oh, I see we forgot about that...Allah Akbar....nice

The situation in Fallujah has meant it has not received the same level of reconstruction aid as other bits of Iraq. There's a lot of work for contractors to do there." The four victims were in two four-wheel-drive vehicles. After the initial attack a crowd gathered, set the vehicles ablaze and threw stones at the burning wreckage.

"I saw the people pull one of the dead bodies out of the car and pour [fuel oil] over it. Then they set the body ablaze," said Omar Khalil, an off-duty Iraqi police officer. "The people were praising God for their good fortune in killing Americans." The body was then dragged down the road by the feet.

Another corpse was kicked and punched by an Iraqi who shouted: "The Americans killed my brother."

The man then began dismembering the corpse with a shovel and body parts were strung by a wire from a telephone cable. At least two bodies were tied to cars and pulled through the streets, witnesses said.

"This is what will happen to every American invader who comes to Fallujah," said a member of the crowd.

Neither American soldiers nor Iraqi police were seen in the area after the attack, although an American aircraft flew low over the scene, scattering the crowd.

Hours after the attack hundreds still danced around the burning wreck of a Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Landcruiser chanting: "Death, death to the Americans." Some were said to be preparing an ambush for American forces if they returned to recover the corpses.

for every example, there's one counter to it...ad nauseum

Item 1 : The reticence of the US media to show video of victims jumpoing to their death from the burning Twin Towers. And the outraged fascination most of us in Korea expressed from seeing those images broadcast to us and others here, far from home.

Item 2 : The photos from Abu Ghraib, many of the most heinous of which have been withheld from publication by the US Gov, supposedly to protect the privacy of the victims, though we know who it's really intended to protect, right? (Seymour Hersh and New Yorker have stated that other photos were viewed but not published as being too graphic.)

Item 3 : The outrage at the photos of the deaths of the contractors ("mercenaries," let's be honest at this late date) at Fallujah a little over a year ago - which scarneck is so keen to have us recall right now - very obviously staged and presented as a delightful bit of video by the perps, and carried dutifully by world media in the west.

Item 4 : The video of Nick Berg's beheading, and the outrage and sadness expressed by many at the loss of personal dignity created by its dissemination.

Item 5 : The video of Kim Sun-il's beheading which resulted in the blocking of many personal websites by the govt here in Korea, and the cynical comments made by many on these forums about the outrage the country experienced for one of their own as opposed to earlier beheading of those from other countries ... though, truth be told, Korean attitudes toward the deaths of non-Koreans pale beside the indifference shown by the American right toward the victims in Abu Ghraib. ("Fraternity hazing," anyone?)

Item : Saddam in his underpants.

Finally : Examine your own reactions ot any of these indignities and trocities and ask yourself how much your political opinions have an influence on your views about which images the public needs or has a right to see in sane and rational democracies ...

Or in democracies that hope one day to be sane and rational.

Examine also your own reactions to these indignities and atrocities and ask yourself how those reactions describe your status as a human being who shares the world with other human beings.

I would like to clear up a few things. Mercs are a name given in the past to individuals who carried out actions separate from a nation state. As we now live in a global world with international companies who are registered in different countries, it is not surprising that the security industry has also become more professional and international.

You used that word almost like it a negative, but those who have decided to seek security work outside of thier countries, are not necessarily unprofessional nor wrong in thier work just as teaching english outside of our countries doesn't make our work less acceptable than teaching in our countries, except in the minds of those who have not come to full understanding that the work is changing.

I heard of one professional from my country who was to work in Iraq as a Security Consultant, $400,000 per year, the Guy is a professional. Was one of the most recognised and distinguished in the Services. The fact that he works in Iraq does not make him bad. If you work for CHUBB which is an international firm and they send you to another country, does that make you a merc. Security work is changing and will continue to change due to the changes that exist and cannot be dealt with by the traditional services. Its an International world my friend with International Changes to all its Service industries and security is just a service industry.

No. "Mercenary" is a word that means a soldier who fights and kills for cash rather than for patriotic idealism. It goes back a long way in history, even to the American Revolutionary War. Google the word "hessian" and you will find this link to wikipedia

Pat Tilman was a soldier, signed up and sacrificed a future the rest of us daydream about, and then the govt lied about how he died. Those guys who were burned and strung up in Fallujah were paid like a football star, and the pay is what brought them to Iraq.

They didn't deserve to die, but Pat Tilman deserves to be called a soldier and they deserve to be called mercenaries.
