| In a departure from my conservative leanings I am at odds with Mr Bush's position on stem cell research. Unfortunately, Bush has already signalled that he will veto this bill. In this case religious beliefs are quite clearly interfering in the passage of law. |

Perhaps some of the legislators voting in favor were given a wake-up call by the scientific progress in stem cell and cloning research being performed in Korea and realized that we cannot afford to fall behind further, Bush and his obstinate ignorance and gut hatred of science be damned. |

| If the Democrats are politically astute, they will introduce a new stem cell research bill in mid October '06 and another one in mid October '08. |

| The democrats should have made more political capital out of this in the last election. John Kerry did refer to it in the context of Reeves, but I thought there was a lot more mileage to be extracted from the issue. Dogbert is right, Bush's interest in science doesn't really go beyond the military variety. Fortunately, some republicans support unfettered access to all the tools necessary to carry out effective stem cell research too. |

Not even that. It is simply a ban on federal funding. CA passed a bill last november allowing the state gov't to issue a bond for billions of dollars to fund stem cell research. They just chose the HQ (will be in SF). Unfortunately those religous idiots are sueing the state, so the funding is being delayed.  |

I voted for that.
Bush is resolutely anti-science. The man is a throwback.
In addition to his unforgivable opposition to stem-cell research, Bush has, according to columnist Thomas Friedman, cut the National Science Foundation budget by $100 million in 2005 and in 2006 proposes shrinking the Department of Energy science programs and basic and applied research in the Department of Defense.
Friedman quips that Congress caters to people who think "intelligent design" is something done by God and not by Intel. It's funny because it's true. |
