South Korea's leading geneticist said yesterday that resistance by the Bush administration to fully pursue stem cell research is an obstacle to U.S. researchers who have the potential to advance medical science.
"The scientific effort to resolve the pain of patients with incurable conditions is very honorable, and I believe no mere individual politician or party can stop the historic trend," Mr. Hwang said at his laboratory at Seoul National University. "Solving these problems is a common responsibility of humanity," he said.

Hwang Wants Stem Cell Cooperation With North Korea

By Kim Tae-gyu
Staff Reporter

South Koreas famous cloning scientist Hwang Woo-suk said joint stem cell research with North Korea will be possible with the approval of the southern government.

The Seoul National University professor, who achieved globally acclaim thanks to his back-to-back stem cell feats, made the comments during an interview with Washington-based Radio Free Asia on Saturday.

``Under the (southern) governments rational consideration, we will be able to stage South-North collaboration in stem cell research, Hwang said.

``We cannot hand over our core technologies to the North. But I think we can share our advanced cloning knowledge with the North, the same ethnicity of us, so that they can develop their own scientific ability.
