...Friggin' Inept Football A-holes. Gosh, the exciting Champions League final was all but ruined by the penalty shootout and was like the second final in three years to be decided by that dumb@ss method of a decider.

Surely they can think of something to decide games without that stupid and asinine shootout.

Sudden death overtime.

I'd kind of like to see it tried, but what if both teams were so terrified of conceding they play for hours?

Might happen once in a blue moon, but people get tired and they make mistakes.

I always find the golden goal to be a pretty flat end to a match though, obviously it's great if you win- but imagine you've played an incredible match like that Liverpool v AC Milan game, then you're in the 150th minute of extra time, your tired defender is a bit over-enthusiastic with a backpass, it hits a bump on the pitch and goes in.
Match over, no chance of a reprieve, overweight woman making tunes. Bugger.

The last minute or so waiting for the final whistle, or the flat out pressure-cooker drama of a penalty shootout can be amazing. No englishman is likely to forget this moment in a hurry

Canadian.

There's nothing worse than watching a team play a sport and then decide the game with individuals having a skills competiton (except in soccer, with everybody so close, it's not skill, it's a luck-off).

They should just keep on having replays until there's a winner just like in the old days.

I really don't see what FIFA has to do with it at all. UEFA is the governing body of club football in Europe.

Penalty shootouts have more to do with holding your nerve and balls of steel than luck. Simple as that. Quit moaning.

What moaning? Silver goal is just plain stupid since it is just a continuation of regular time. Pro hockey calls for a shootout in the playoffs AFTER three 20-minute sudden-death periods, but NO playoff game has ever gone to that.

Endurance is also part of the game, and well, the better conditioned players will come out in sudden-death, no matter how many periods are played.

Uh no. You're wrong.

http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/hockey/OT.html

There are no shoot-outs in the NHL.

But if you were just refering to Intl. hockey, then yes, you are right. At least about the shoot-out bit.

I don't know what you're going on about the silver goal rule for, as FIFA scrapped that almost a year ago Rolling Eyes

Precisely, and that's why those dorks are so stupid.

Wow, that's even better that the NHL has no penalty shootouts, definitely something the Euros can learn from the N. Americans.
