I still can't get over the fact that so many people take chain letters seriously. On the other hand, a frightening number of people also believe in psychics and the efficacy of internet petitions so there you go.

Whenever well-meaning people send me a fwd, I always reply with this letter and it seems to work:

Hi,

I've made it my policy to delete "fwds" from people without reading them. When I give my email address to friends it is with this understanding that if they want to write and say hi, and talk and exchange personal messages of life between us, that is fine, but I don't support, agree with, or cater to spam messages that always insist I make other people read or forward the same message along.

There are two reasons why I have this policy.

1. The more useless messages that are forwarded, even with good intentions, the more clogged up the bandwidth of the Internet becomes. Internet bandwidth is not (contrary to popular belief) unlimited. Every time someone clicks fwd to their address book, this uses up valuable resources. Clogged internet bandwidth means there is more lag in many of the services provided by webhosts. A web page that could take 1 second to load, soon becomes 2 seconds, and so on. Many times those "404 - Unable to reach this website" messages are a result of internet signals (packets) timing out because of high bandwidth use and the inability to reach the destination.

2. Many programs are set up to catch fwds and get email addresses. Once they get them they take those email addresses and sell them to companies that send out more spam like "Improve your luck with women", "Get a University degree in days", "buy Viagra cheap", "Our teens are the hottest on the Internet" and so on. In fact many of the people that set the programs up to do this, are the same people that send out false information, like "If you don't forward this, MSN will start charging you money for this service", or "cute messages" that sound so inspirational.

If you want to write and talk, I am all for that. I enjoy chatting. But if you don't have anything to say, and want to keep a presence in my life -- don't worry, you already are a presence in my life, I don't need forwarded mail for me to think of friends.

I hope you will have a good day, and that all is well.

Thats sweet
But I prefer using just two words, second being "off"

Had a wacky experience with a Scottish co-worker once.
She was fwded a nasty one, FWD this to ten people or you will die, something like that. Anyshe was livid! Fuming that her friend would send that to her. She spend 10 minutes cursing her friend. Then wrote a very good abusive email to her "friend". Actually I think that fwd killed their friendship - not a close friend more of an acquaintance. anyway I digress...

AND then its starts getting trippy...
Then she says...Can I send it to you??

I say:
huh?

Again, she says, "Can I send it to you?"

I say "Huh?" again because I am just as confused, moreso actually.

"I need to send it to ten people, can I send it to you?"

I was like "Huh?" a third time!!!
Now more confused than ever!

Then I said, No, (rude word plus off)
You hated getting it from your fried, now your gonna send it on? Argh are you crazy??

Yes she was.

ps neighbor...I was blowing snot out of nose all night.....sorry if you heard that. it was nasty!!!

i got one of those from my sister once, I think it was about MSN paying people to send forward emails or whatever. I sent her a polite response saying please don't do that again, it clogs up my inbox yada yada. You should of seen the downright nasty response I got from her. She insisted it was true and that I was costing her money. She still didn't believe it when I sent her a link that debunked that myth. She still didn't believe it.

To say the least i rarely hear from her now.

Happiest day of my life when the company's sys admin had a program hack up exes and other executables. I hated receiving those stupid things from "friends".

"Did you play that game I sent you? You have to bang Jar Jar Binks on the head with a hammer. It's so fun!"

"Errr... haven't gotten to it yet."

Ay, Captain! Hope you feel better! I was probably busy listening to the crack-head ajuma with a megaphone down the hill last night! She sure has been on some rants lately! She might succeed in turning me into a cranky westerner yet.

I get forwards from my sister all of the time that are all political. I get tired of all of the articles from my sister, but she is so earnest!

No chain letter stuff from her, but the stuff I get from others just gets deleted, I don't bother to tell them.

Hey Poet- aren't you off this week?

Was that the result of an internet petition or a letter (or letters) e-mailed directly to the editor? I don't see any mention of a petition in the letter and it seems that CNN was responding directy to her letter. I was referring to those online petitions where everyone adds their name to the list.

I do not open them, I do not care about interesting and amusing bits of info and any entertaining websites usually put spyware on my computer...so I don't bother.

AJRimmer...you never bother me at all...I never hear anything from your room. I keep thinking you are a mouse. I didn't know you were sick though....want some Red Dwarf CD's to get you through?

Desultude...Yep, I have the whole week off...its great being able to relax and do nothing (if you consider marking session 2 assignments, and grading participation nothing). I am also designing some marking sheets for next semester and planning on the books that I'll use and how I'll deliver the courses...I am switching from teaching speaking to writing, so I need to be prepared.
