have any of you bought gold in Thailand? I know nothing about this and yet each time I go I feel tempted. You see I am a middle-aged man and I need a gold-chain to wear around my neck-oh and to fit the image I think I will need some chest hair implants.
Seriously, any of you knowledgeable on this subject?
I know there are a lot of scams in Thailand, but it is known to be a good place to buy gold.
Do you think it is a reasonable investment? (The Thai's do). What about customs in your persepctive countries? Could you get it through without paying any duty? |

I wouldn't, MASH, there are so many scams.
My wife bought what was 'garanteed' silver from a vendor once, only to have another vendor 'prove' to us that we'd been had. The 2nd vendor took the "silver" pendant we'd bought, put some kind of liquid on it and rubbed it on a stone. The "silver" came off on the stone, revealing what appeared to be a bronze-colored metal beneath.
When we went back to the 1st vendor who actually sold us the pendant (AND garanteed it), the lady just shrugged and wouldn't talk/look at us anymore.
Moral of the experience: if you don't know much about it, it isn't worth the risk of the scammers. |

Most gold merchants in Thailand are reputable, and almost all of them are Chinese. Gold is seen as currency in Thai, so if hard times beset you, you can cash in your necklace at nearly the price you paid for it. However the purveyors of gemstones can be dodgy; get a second opinion before you cough up for that star sapphire. |
