Koreans (Seoul) speak less english than I expected
There are almost no city trashcans, yet the city is relatively trashfree.
What percentage of the population has clothes dryers
|
A few friends in Canada who have not been to Korea met some Koreans there and were impressed by their English. And the Koreans told them, oh, many Koreans speak English well. I had to set them straight. That "many" is a flexible word, and reflects maybe 1 or 2 percent of the population.
(But many Koreans speak or at least understand a little English, unlike Japan (near zero), I have heard.)
Seoul has a ton of trash almost everywhere!
Actually, you realize here how unimportant clothes dryers are, and how wasteful westerners are with that, among other things (though they are useful in laundromats, which you will not find here). The floor of my apartment is a fine place to dry clothes. And so are those racks you can put wet clothes on. A good idea I have not seen used elsewhere.

Apparently, there used to be trashcans on streets in Seoul but they got removed pre-1988 olympics due to fears of terrorist attacks.
I may have just made that fact up or heard it from a bitter drunken older lifer in the corner of a bar somewhere btw. My brain is not what it used to be. |

You've never seen a clothes rack before? |

As far as I know they were massively reduced after the districts implemented the pay-for-bag system. ppl were stuffing public bins full instead of buying bags, so they did away with a lot of them. |

Or maybe conditions are different in 2014 than they were nine years ago. Just a thought. |

I suspect Smithington didn't check the best-before-date on this thread.
What's with raising old threads like this?
Jeez, it sure is getting slow on this site. |

Have you ever noticed all the Koreans around here. Where did they all come from? This isn't Los Angeles, you know! |

I noticed most of the cars have dents, or scratched up. I didn't realize it was the bad driving, I thought they were too poor to fix them.
Next I noticed my first hogwon provided apartment had bars on the windows. I thought I lived in a high crime area. |

I noticed that not all places of business have western toilets. And I noticed that that wasn't a good thing as one adjusts to a diet of Korean stews and spicy dishes.
This was over 20 years ago, though. You didn't get your pick of western restaurants and most places had squatters. In a way, it helped the few westerners working downtown bond as we all shared intel on where the western style johns could be found. |

I noticed that there are more fat assed westerners than thin ones. |
