do any of you carry it? Or do some of you buy it for when you leave Korean on a vacation?

Folks said we should look into it and LP seems to push it

I don't know, we've been fairly healthy the entire time we've been here maybe just feeling the luck may be running out and want to hedge our bets.

Yeh I usually pick it up on my way out of country on vacation. The booths on the main floors of Incheon airport dont cater to nonKoreans, but Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) in the basement does. The woman speaks some english, it only takes minutes, & its cheap. Never had to make a claim on it -- no idea how complicated that might be -- but it still provides some peace of mind.

What exactly does it usually cover, anyway? Health, theft...?

I always just get an ISIC or ITIC card because they have travel insurance included with them and some other goodies. If you just graduated from college you can probably easily get the ISIC. I've found that STA travel/council travel isn't too strict about checking on the acreditations.

Coverage is strictly health-related. Sudden illness or injury, hospitalization, evacuation if necessary, death benefits. Theres like 5 levels of premiums from basic to deluxe. As I recall, middle range ran somewhere between $1 - $1.50 a day.

thanks folks for the info. I had a ITIC card once and forgot about that.

Question would you keep it here as a supplement to the Korean Nat'l Health Insurance?

Maybe turning 40 over the weekend has increased my paranoia about getting really sick here and having to evac back to the US

I've got bad asthma so I got full cover before I left. I've only had one bad attack whilst I've been here which is amazing.

I've never had insurance whilst overseas unless I was working for a US co. Heck, I never got an insurance card working at the hogwan. I've looked into it a few times but the long term stuff (1 year) from a US co. is expensive.

I've found hospitals and Dr.'s in asia to be really cheap.
I paid like $10 to see a great western Dr. in Bangkok, meds also cheap.

But.....for 1.50 a day (that schwa quoted) I think I would, especially for a short trip.

the idea of travel insurance is to protect you for the UNFORSEEN!

let me paint you a picture. you are walking through a subway station and the steps have just been cleaned and are still wet. you slip, bounce gracefully down to the bottom of the steps and snap your leg in a couple of places. who is going to pay the medical bill?
