I also second the pet response.
Expats, if you even feel like you won't stick around for the long term in Korea, don't get a pet. They need owners who can love them for the long-haul, not just shifted from owner to owner or eventually to the pound or becoming ingredients for someone's boshintang.
Let's get real.

They got a consumer debt problem that if they aren't careful will do serious damage to the banking industry. |

The industry here also has a higher interest rate on average and extends credit cards to more people who would not have qualified for credit cards in the US. Not every person of a poor credit history will default, and thus warrants the risk of lending credit. Sure, more will default but more revenue will be generated than be lost.
Or where should we draw the line? You missed paying your phonebill once four years ago, thus you can't get a credit card until 2005 because you are a credit deliquent?
For there to a risk-free credit line, it would have to be secured with cash of a equal or greater amount to the amount of credit extended.
That's why credit card companies charge interest. There's a risk involved. They know this. If someone defaults, it's not as though it's some great surprise.

If every person with a credit card balance defaulted tomorrow, then yes there might be an area of concern. But that isn't going to happen. As well, credit cards are a profitable venture. If they were not profitable, banks (and other agencies) would not offer them. Defaulters are paid out from the interest earned of others. |

Is it difficult to bring a pet back to the states? Isn't there quite a long quarantine period?
Just wondering because Ive been thinking about bringing my cat. |

It's not difficult, just make sure you cross the T's and dot the I's with regards to their immunizations. As long as you have those in order, and documented there's no quarantine period. |

precisely. IF yu can take it home, or find a home for it, by all means get a pet.
be warned all yu australians and new zealanders however - animal quarantine for pets from korea is a lengthy and very expensive process. NZ and aussie do not have rabies yu see, and rabies has a long incubation period.
for north america quarantine is relatively simple.
note also that birds and other non-mammalian pets are totally prohibited import to aussie and nz.
i am a vet, and have on several times been called upon to euthenaise animals that could not be taken home for whom no homes could be found.
