I just finished taking the Chosun University course in Gwangju and I have to say that it was one of the best investments I have made here (well, really the ONLY investment I have made here).
The classes were really small, my teachers were a lot of fun, and the class fostered an environment which allowed everyone in there to feel comfortable making mistakes and ask random questions.
The cost when I took it was 400,000 won and it may seem like a lot but when you break it down into 8 hours of class (on the weekends) for 10 weeks, the price per class is like 5,000 won per hour. Not too shabby. Also, since the classes start in the early afternoon, and they gave you a week to do workbook exercises, I was able to go out on the weekends, meet my friends without any problems, and ace the final test (had to throw that in there).
For those in the Gwangju area, it's worth a look. |

There is a good new book out called Roadmap to Korean. The autor is Richard Harris. It was 15,000 won at Kyobo. It gives a lot of background structure of how to learn the language and it was just published, so it is a lot easier to understand and practical for today. |

I've heard that Sogang is the best program for learning Korean, and I believe this to be true from all the info. I've gathered. But, is it really worth shelling out that kind of cash, or is it better to learn from a program like Sisa (or other) that costs dramatically less. I believe Sogang is 1.2 for 10 weeks, and Sisa is 190,000 a month. I know Sogang is a better program, but I can't decide. Any feedback about Sisa or other programs like it. Thanks, for the help. Enough with this hagwon stuff, it's time to study. -split |
I took the sogang course for the level one class, I found the program to be incredibly useful!!! I think it is definatley the best program to learn Korean. I aslo took the sisa course and although it was a useful class the teachers changed every month and I found it very difficult to get used to the new teaching style every month. If you don't think that will be a problem then go with the cheaper class but I highly recomend the sogang program if you can afford the time (4 hours a day,) and money..... |

It was printed in New Jersey. The ISBN # is: 1-56591-187-3
Richard Harris is Canadian and lives in Seoul. I would like to meet him. (If you are here, send me a PM.)
The intoduction is great:

This language can be learned. Despite what people tell you, despite the rumors and the myths that surround this language, Korean can be learned by anyone willing and able to sacrifice the time and energy necessary to do so........To be honest I love this language as much as I curse at it each and every day of my life.... |

Son Deureo! FYI we rolled all the board stickies into one GIANT sticky... see the Board FAQ stickies at the top of each forum. All the threads that were formerly stickies are linked from there.
Stickies become "wallpaper" after a while and we found that people weren't paying much attention to them anymore & there were too many of them cluttering up the forum.
Lots of people can make equally valid arguments as to why a thread should be a sticky... and if we listened to everyone, we'd have a screen full of 'em.
But anyway, we're just "stickyfying" special events/things with a time frame, such as the book exchange this weekend. |
