Maybe the topic list should include time travel --- the closing date is 15th September, 2001 . Or is the contest a regular feature every year ?

Speaking of essay contests, todays Korea Times is advertising the 7th Seoul Essay Contest. Theme this year is "Reasons to love Seoul."

In the subject guidelines they kindly offer examples of suitable titles, like Hope and future of Seoul, Beauty of Seoul, Scent of Seoul .. (!!!) well I almost blew coffee out my nose at that one!

hoju, looks like the mother land (england) could rub both our faces. Confused at the world cup, there pretty strong, but the ab's tri nations match in sydney should be a good 1, lets see how they get on with the bok's this weekend.

I saw the ad for the 7th Essay contest...first prize is 3000 won. That's three thousand won. Surely they made a mistake?

Yep you read wrong. 3 million -- not bad for a 3-page job!

Three million? I've changed my mind, I will enter.
What do the judges like? Decent writing or flattery of Korea?

ahem,

I entered (and won) a "Seoul Now" essay contest (prize 100,000) won and was promptly never paid, even after repeated calls from both me and my Korean wife.

On the other hand, I won a prize in the "Seoul Essay" contest you have mentioned and was paid promptly, and I received a nice certificate (even if my name was mispelled Rolling Eyes

A little word of advice. Blow sunshine up their *sses. That's what they want to hear. Don't be too negative on Seoul (that's what we really want to do), but you could include some ideas for making Seoul a better place (which they go ga-ga over).

Good luck!

Congratulations, you wonderful writer, you. Very Happy

What is it with the writers in the Korea Times and Herald? Maybe it's just different writing styles, but so many of the articles seem like passionate opinions without much meat. Or wishy-washy sicky-sick stuff.

Is that the sort of writing style they like in the essays?
