Believe it or not, our recruiter has been great! He's bent over backwards to please my boyfriend and I. Everything we've asked for, he's negotiated with the school and gotten for us (in writing).
When we weren't happy with our first offer, he actually said to me: "if you're not happy with this, we'll keep looking. You know I get my money anyway, but if you're not comfortable, we'll try another school". It took us 2 months to get us everything we wanted, but we're so pleased.
He made sure that I was able to talk to western teachers at each school...I was even given their email addresses so that I could ask them questions privately!
I'll be hopping on a plane in 2 weeks and tonight he told me that if I ever have any problems with my hagwon, he'll take care of us.
I think he's been really great because he spent a few years studying in North America so, he understands both sides of the coin and is able to negotiate well.
Has anyone else had a good experieince with a recruiter? They all can't be greedy, money hungry maniacs! |

My recruiter was lazy. I prefer to talk directly with the director or other hiring person at a given school, and stick with places I know. |

My recruiter was awesome. I have seen some bad ones, but the ones I had (from the same company) turned out great.
My friends used them, and they all had good experiences (expect one, but it got sorted out in the end). |

You're raving about what a great recruiter you have, and you haven't even arrived in Korea yet?
I'm not saying he's not a good recruiter, but how can you possibly know if you're not even in Korea yet? Most teachers don't learn the true nature of their recruiters until they start their jobs, where they get a chance to compare what they got to what they were promised, and what (if anything) their recruiter did to try to rectify the situation. A lot of teachers who had bad recruiters didn't find out what kind of recruiter they had until half way through the contract.
I hope everything works out for you, but I think it is WAY too early for you to be talking about how you have found a great recruiter. |

If you're asking me, I don't remember the company's name, but my recruiter's name is Keith. I'd be happy to put anyone in touch with him, if you like.
My boyfriend had visa problems because of a past job and we had a lot of other recruiters dump us when they found out. But Keith was great! He got the job done! He did everything for us, including pressuring my boyfriend's former employer into writing a release letter!
For 2 months, he's set up interviews with different schools and phone calls with Western teachers. He made sure we didn't take jobs we weren't comfortable with and when schools rejected us because of my boyfriend's immigration problem, Keith just looked for other schools that would make us happy. He spent a lot of time and $ on us and we aren't even there yet.
WE are really hoping this new school will be decent. I was able to talk to a Western teacher who's been there for 3 years and we are happy with our 3 bedroom apt that we don't have to share (yep, got that in writing). I'll let you know in a week and a half if it is all as good as has been promised. In the meantime, if anyone would like to hook up with Keith, please let me know! |

That's lame. If it takes a teacher 6 months to figure out how incompetant their employer is, how do you expect a recruiter to know this from a couple of interviews?
It's so easy to critisize recruiters. The best a recruiter can do is put you in touch with the current teachers so you can get the real deal, and even that is no guarantee.
Recruiters...these poor suckers! They have to deal with one inept hagwon owner after another squeezing blood from a stone to divine whether they are trustworthy or not, and regardless of how many teachers they can satisfy the only ones you hear from are those with a grudge.
There are just as many teachers who find crappy hagwon jobs on their own!
My only advice is to deal with someone who is prompt, direct, and doesn't rush you.
Good Luck All! |

We had a good recruiter, too. We spoke to a few. He didnt rush us. He answered our questions and got us in contact with other foreign teachers at the school. The thing that was different about him was that when he didnt know the answer right away(how far the apt was from the hagwon, for example), he said so. He didnt bs us and got us the answer as soon as he knew. We have been here for a month and it is great so far. And the other foreign teachers at our school, who have been here longer, have no horror stories to tell.
His name is Andy Lee and he is with ESL Link. I think you can find it with esl link keyword. Good luck. |

I had a hopeless one, - no names mentioned here - but he simply lied about everything and gave me a contract that was a mess of ungrammatical confusion..... and lies.... but my employer was a good person so in some things I was lucky,,, if you read up on the story just published on Recruiters, it looks like an uncontrolled rabble is developing..and what's the bet it gets worse?
