hi all,

i recently did a week long class with my middle school students on common english expressions, and i'm thinking of doing an encore as it was very successful and i think quite helpful to them. What i'm looking for here is some other expressions that are commonly used in the english language...short, usually slang, expressions...if anyone could help me out with some more i'd be much obliged...here are some i've used in my previous class...

How's it going?
Give me a break.
I'm going to "hang out with" so and so....
Just relax...
I'm going to hit the sack (admittedly a tad dated, but still a saying i suppose)
Take it easy...
I'm a little out of it today (I use this one a lot so it was beneficial to teach them what it meant)
What's going on?
I'm going to "drop by" the store...
Just around the corner...

and so on and so on...

does anyone have any other recommendations...thanks in advance...

There are so many books of idioms should not be difficult to find. I usually add one or two for extra points on a test. Get's the mind thinking a little for the more advanced students. Try and use some Idioms from England, Australia and New Zealand. Try to show the difference in cultures is what allows for the relevance of meaning.

On a side note, does anybody notice with some of your english-speaking Korean friends, that they like to say 'What the *beep*?', a lot more than Westerners? I crack up when they say that. I'm starting to use it a lot more, as a result.

In all seriousness, I second "What's up?" And for Pete's sake, teach your kids to say something other than "I'mfinethankyouandyou" when you ask them how they are.

The most dull answer I get is:

Me:" So, what'd you do last night?"

Student:"Nothing special"

I've told students that I don't want to hear it, and to encourage creativity I've told them that they should tell me a good lie instead, if they have to.

Note for the creative thinking thread, after saying that I was told:

" I bailed my brother out of jail"

"I told my boss I was going to quit work and study English full time"

They may be rare, but there are some creative Koreans out there!

Everytime they reply with "So-so" I hit them with:

"So, why has your day been so so-so?"

They either laugh or are sick to death of it.
