I know that this topic has been posted to death, but I am still curious as to how one goes about setting up a Korean bank account (before going to Korea if it has to even be done before leaving Canada), and then how one sends money home on a monthly basis. This is an important thing for me to take care of before I leave so I was wondering if any of you had some relevant and recent info about this, particularly you Canadians out there.
Thanks |

when you get to Korea you just walk into a bank with your passport or ARC, and ask for an account. It shouldn't take too long to set up. When you get paid, bring your pay stub ( some banks ask for it) and your bank info in Canada. Tell thm that you'd like to wire money and you have to sign a form and away it goes. |

The language barrier can be an issue, so your employer should probably help you out with getting an account in your name.
Make sure you get the transfer information from your Canadian bank before you leave. |

When opening a bank account in Korea you should always use your passport...if you use your ARC card you have to close it at the end of the year when you leave.
As I am coming back I am keeping the same account I am just changing my bank card to an international one then I can use the ATM's in Canada to access my account here. |

I stick a million Won into a soju bottle each month, cork it and throw it into the Han River. It always gets where it's supposed to go. |

I did some reading up on transferring money back home (im in Canada) and wanted to ask a few questions
1) Its better to convert WON in Korea into my home currency instead of bringing the WON home to Canada and converting it here right?
2) Im only going to be making like 2.6million won for 4 weeks. So with this amount, whats the best way to get it back home?
Travellers cheques made out in my home currency?
Just totally converting the whole sum into my home currency?
Having the bank wire transfer it back home to my own bank?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

To transfer it back to my home account, do i simply bring my passport into my Korean bank and give them my home account information and tell them to transfer it back?
How about the exchange rate and stuff? |

yes, that is what you do. the exchange rate changes daily so when it is to your liking you can make the transfer. |

Is there a limit to how much money you can send home per year? Any worries about the CRA and taxes?? |

the best way si to setup an account at the KEB whcih has english help. then ask for a second card for the reaosn. or get two accounts one at KB and KEB and then send one ATM card to Canada. It is CHEAPER and EASIER to get this done. If you dont trust ayone to do this then you are stuck with wire and high fees. |

I have a bank account with KEB now. So it should be easier to send money home correct? I asked for internet banking and they asked me how much I would like to send to Canada and said I can do it online. But I've been going through the entire thing and found no way to enter information of my bank in Canada all I've seen are Korean banks.
So is the only way to send money home is to go to the bank and do it?
As well how long does it usually take for the money to make it into the Canadian bank account? |
