Im with itchy. I like to drive cars alot, especially fast ones that handle well, but they are such a pain in the ass to own that i would just rather not have one. They suck up your money, kill the air around you, and eventually the car becomes your owner instead of the othe way around. |

none. They are crazy drivers. They drive on the wrong side of the road. I like using my left hand for changing gears. But I miss my car.

Fair enough. You original answer said "None. I hate the things. Wouldn't be caught dead in one." All very general statements without explanation, so I wasn't sure. I wasn't the only one who misread you.
Anyway, so why do you hate them? |

Well, far be it for me to doubt your assessment, except that the Pony and Excel both ceased production in 1994 and the latest Sonatas are getting average to above average scores during recent safety tests:
http://www.crashtest.com/hyundai/ie.htm
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/Cars/2003MidS.html
--not to mention glowing reviews in North American car mags. For positive Sonata reviews see:
nctd.com (New Car test Drive)
auto.consumerguide.com
canadiandriver.com
MSN autos, Edmunds, Car and Driver, Road and Track etc.
For the 2002-2003 models I've yet to see a bad review, actually.

No disagreement there--older Korean cars are crappy. Actually they weren't winterized well over the first five or so years they hit the Canadian market. However, I believe they saw the error of their ways in the mid 90's and durability has steadily improved.
Of course, very little looks good when compared to a German engineered car, they are generally quite well made... |

The Hyundae Elantra got really respectable ratings in the U.S. and Edmunds.com even said that it was a better buy (for a new car) than the honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, so I considered buying one this past month. Instead I got a really good deal on a used Toyota Corolla and didn't even make it to looking at Hyundaes. Really the only concern I would have had about it was that it had a poor ofset crash test score...but in every other respect it was very comprable to the Civic and Corolla and had a lot more features included in the standard model.
Both Kia and Hyundaes have great guarantees here too. Korean products were kind of crappy in the U.S. ten years ago, but almost all of the companies (Samsung and LG included) are working really hard to upgrade their image and their products now, so I wouldn't really worry about buying Korean now.
Question: Is the Hyundae Elantra even sold in korea still? My boyfriend said that it is a really old model there. He has a Kia pride (1990 I think) that still runs well, although it's pretty beat up on on the outside. |

Yes, Elantra is Avante. And as the happy owner of a 97 Avante here in Korea, I'd have to agree with one of the previous poster's endorsement.
The car is very well built, with nary a squeak or rattle, and absolutely nothing burns or leaks (then again, it's still only got 55,000 k on it- I lucked out on this car) . I've had it two years now without a problem (knock on wood of course) . It's not exactly a powerhouse, but it's peppy enough to keep up on the expressways, it handles quite well and is very good on the crazy mountain roads here, has a nice sized trunk, and it's quite good on gas to boot. I think it's also about the perfect size for Korea driving.
I'd be very interested in the Avante XD when I get back home, whatever they call it there now - that's a solid drivetrain and a well balanced car overall. And if you're looking at getting a car here, the Avantes are a little pricier on the used market than some other equivalent models, but there is a good reason for that. Check 'em out. |
