I get paid around $19.86 cdn/ hour. not including prep time.
At the exchange rate right now i am making $2383.81 cdn a month
over a year that will come to $30,989 (including year end bonus).
$30,000 a year back home ain't that bad but the situation here improves when the tax factor comes in. I don't know what the exact tax rate would be in Canada but i believe it would be close to 50%. Here we pay less than 5%. Also for us teachers we don't have to pay rent which can save us anywhere between $3600 to $8400 or higher depending on where you live back home.
So if I was back home and paying 50% tax and paying for a shared apartment (at 300 a month) I would be netting $11,894 cdn a year. AT a tax rate of forty percent and $300/month rent it comes to $14,993. Which is less than I will save this year (hopefully)
Also we get free airfare.

Yeah, I calculated what my income is worth back home by throwing in accomodation expenses, figuring in income tax, not having a car, etc etc. Basically my income of over slightly $20,000 USD/year is really about $35,000 USD. Not great, but not that bad either. I don't think I'd be able to save a 1/3 of that income back in the states either.
