North fires a shot, hitting post in South

North Korea said it accidentally fired a shot across the inter-Korean border, which then hit a storage building inside a South guard post compound, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said yesterday.

South Korean soldiers heard the sound of a gunfire around 11:43 a.m., and found a broken window of a warehouse at a guard post inside the eastern Demilitarized Zone," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. "At that time, soldiers were on duty on the first floor, but no one was injured." At 1 p.m., North telephoned the South through a direct line set up for the cross-border railroad project and said that the shooting was an accident. "A gun was fired accidentally while our soldiers were cleaning their arms," Colonel Yu Yong-chol of the North Korean Army explained. It was North Koreas third acknowledgement of accidental cross-border gunfire since the armistice.

Anybody who's ever handled firearms knows you've got to be an utter effing moron to have a weapon discharge while you're cleaning it.

1. You always clear (make sure no ammunition is present) the weapon before cleaning.
2. Exactly what was he cleaning that could cause it to discharge? Most times a weapon is in some state of disassembly for cleaning.

I know the NK statement is total BS, and so do the SK and USFK forces. Do they really think anybody is going to believe this guy was polishing the trigger or some such thing?

And to not only hit a building on the south side of the DMZ, but to take out a window? I wonder how good they can shoot when they're trying to hit something?

You can BET your life that if the south or USFK forces did the same thing, the north would be in an uproar! They would be raising all kinds of holy hell!

It's a pretty ham-handed stunt to pull during the nuke negotiations.

China and Russia may well have repudiated NK behind the closed doors of the negotiations (it wouldn't be a big surprise); could it be that NK has finally been forced to accept that China and Russia have more or less deserted it and that it's on its own?

Alternately, China and Russia could be singing a different tune than they sang in the lead up to the meeting (no nukes on the Penninsula)? Perhaps NK feels emboldened.

Anyone who knows anything about firearms knows the likelihood of them hitting a window in a small building by accident is very slim. Some dumb ass did it on purpose. Cleaning the weapon! Yea right! That is the BS story of the month!

This is the second time in the last few weeks shots were fired accidentally. The claim they were accidents is just diplomatic cover. The North is demanding everyone to pay attention to them. I think it's kind of like the little kid in the grocery store throwing a tantrum.
