So you support what Psy said?
This is not some small secret here. Psy said some pretty controversial stuff and now he's parading around America milking it for all its worth.
Psy's been exposed and its time the people know the truth.
It seems YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH! |
Are you simple?
It's music, artists can write/rap/sing about whatever they want. There are neo-nazis/rappers/etc making controversial music, are you currently trying to "out" them as well? If not, I guess that means you support what they say. |

Dude, the guy is singing about wishing harm to innocent women and children.
His goose deserves to be cooked and served deep fried to us apologists. |

Well, I didn't say I agree with what he said. He was clearly angry about the tank incident and he penned a protest song. I don't see the problem, he's free to say what he wants. |

Rumour has it that PSY and Justin the Beaver had a punch-up outside a club. He is going to be even more popular now. He won't have to worry about penning his next 'hit'. Anti-American crowd in the rest of the world will make his previous songs hits. The video has been yanked by his management company but it will re-surface somewhere. If you think he's going to disappear, you are under-estimating the world anger at Bush-Cheney era American foreign policy. |

You can say that again. Republican leaders Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, Ann Coulter have shown the future. When you've got it, flaunt it! Astronaut Dick Gordon said thirty years before: When you can't be the best, be colorful! Think about this: this Che Guevara actually accomplish anything? Or is his reputation based on myth created by his worshippers? |

Here's the thing. Tragic as the deaths of the two girls was, it was a simple accident. A traffic accident, and Koreans really shouldn't be lecturing others on the safe operation of vehicles. Tanks (which PSY was destroying in effigy) are what liberated Korea, and which to this day hold a North Korean invasion at bay. Everything that South Korea has accomplished over the last sixty years was only possible by the protection provided by those very tanks. Should the US leave Korea and the North invades they won't even have their precious K-pop. PSY and his ilk will be denounced as culturally corrupted fools who need to do some time in a lovely North Korean re-education camp.
American tanks in Korea are a good thing. And since they have been here sixty years, its remarklable that accidents such as that of 2002 didn't occur more often. It was a tragic accident, but that is all it was. An accident. But the Korean media, entertainers, politicians and netizens weren't content to leave it like that. They spread stories that the deaths were intentional, and that the tanks actually backed up over the girls to make sure they were dead. It was all a frenzy of lies mixed with that uniquely Korean mix of racism, xenophobia and selective memory.
For PSY to have mouthed such hateful lyrics aimed at innocent American families because of a freak traffic accident is unforgivable. |

Dude, it's not a uniquely Korean phenomenon.
It wasn't so much about the girls getting run over, it was the perception that the American military was indifferent to the whole incident.
Think like a cop shooting of an unarmed black teenager. Now, many things are possible because of the existence of police officers. Things are safer and better overall. Maybe the shooting was an accident. But if the police department circles the wagons and declares the whole thing over with, with no punishment, then yeah people are going to get upset. A minor is dead.
Reverend Al would be there in a heartbeat, so its not a uniquely Korean phenomenon. Protests, pop culture figures getting involved, rumours spreading. Those are things human beings do, not Koreans.
Also, the ROK army cold defeat the North Korean army by itself at this point. But yes, from 1950-~1975 the South owes much to the US.

At some point you have to let it go and let people take credit on their own. I'd say that point came in the 1980s. At that point the whole "You owe us everything" line goes from being true to being stupid. Not EVERYTHING was possible.
I always find it odd that the voices who are so against Korea's anti-American sentiment are the ones who are so strongly anti-Korean. I mean, if they themselves were Korean, they'd probably be the most resentful at the American presence, or if the situation were reversed, would scream the most about a permanant Korean military presence inside their home nation, dictating policy.
None of this excuses Psy's stupidity. It's not the anti-American sentiment that's wrong, it's the calling for the torture of innocent women and children that's despicable. Nothing justifies that. I do hope the news comes out and then he can be assigned to the ash heap of pop culture history. |

Indifferent? Where did that perception come from, an intelligent person might ask, especially when the military leadership apologized immediately. There was no indifference. There was a lot of damn lies from Korean politicians and Korean bigots.

Also, the families on base collected money for the families of the girls killed - the next day (if I recall).
If there was a feeling in Korea that the US Military was indifferent, I'd lay the blame on the k-media and a number of anti-American groups. |

Correct. People do tend to overreact when unresolved feeling are mixed with a terrible situation.
The actions by the American government and media after 9/11 are a great example of this.

But who fanned this perception?
Like Captain Corea said the American reaction was shock and sorrow.
But the way some of my students have described it to me was that the soldiers were laughing or didn't care.
Where did this perception (held by many Koreans to this day) come from?
Furthermore, why was it taken literally as truth by many in Korea?

I agree.

Exactly!
South Koreans should at some point be credit for their own success. While the Americans provided the necessary economic and military support it was the Korean people themselves who did most of the work.
But I do feel many Americans believe many in Korea are ungrateful to them for their support (selfish or not) when they see anti-American sentiment. |

Of course he can say what he wants, just as a foreigner has the freedom to post "*beep* Korea" on an online forum. It's just happens to be, that kind of stuff tends to get a reaction out of people.
Psy being a mainstream "artist," he probably just didn't want to be left out. Anti-Americanism was what's popular back in the day. |

The Anti-Americanism wouldn't bother me as much if there was at least something interesting or original about it. Granted it is in Korean, maybe it comes across better in that language. Doubt it. |
