I had a Korean room mate, whatta jerk he was! So one night I snuck into his room, turned on the fan, aimed it right at him and then closed the door. Worked like a charm. Cops came, saw the fan, 'nuff said. Got away with murder no prob. Thank you Mr. Fanmaker!

Annoying students? Just close the door and turn on the fan!

We slept last night in a Korean love hotel. We had the windows closed and the fan on full blast because of noise coming in from outside. We survived but I did have a nightmare that people were trying to asphixiate me by spraying insecticide. (I'm allergic to it).

Here's the official warning from the Cultural Guide for Migrant Workers in Korea, a publication of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. (Click through to image 33.)

Quote:
DANGEROUS ELECTRIC FANS

In summer many go to bed with a fan on. In some cases a fan turned on too long can cause death from oxygen deficiency, hypothermia, or fire from overheating. A fan with a timer can help prevent such dangers: you can set the timer before going to bed for one to two hours' run. Do not forget to have the windows open for ventilation.

Umm, does this also apply to air-conditioners, or only fans?

Here's another post dug up from the depths of Dave's!

I never did get that reply from the BMA, although I've slept in many enclosed rooms in South Korea, and in throughout the world, with the fan or air conditioning switch ON and I'm still alive, just!

Nail on the head. Also... LOL... there is nothing plausible about your explanation.

I think spontaneous human combustion is much more interesting. But that results from overweight, alcoholic smokers sitting in a chair and falling asleep whilst the cigarette starts the fire.

Last year my VP told me I shouldn't have a fan on my desk blowing straight into my face. I should reflect the air off a wall. Rolling Eyes

Also, my classroom smelled a bit funky sometimes for some reason, but I was told I couldn't use an air freshener because it's bad for Korean people. What, only Koreans? Shocked

Last time I studied biology we all have the same respiratory systems. Or am I missing something? Do Koreans have gills?

Eh, some of my co-teachers were telling me how Korean women don't drink cold water after they have children or go through menopause because their bodies change. When I told them that the vast majority of Americans have drinks with ice--including older women--they were shocked and chocked it up to "Koreans have different biological systems."

Guys, am I alive? I am not sure, because I put my fan all night, and I somehow managed to survive. Very Happy It must be a miracle! Ha!
The only fan death I believe is one somehow catching fire and the fire spreading or a rock star getting shot by a crazed fan.

Fan death is so lame...

I have been sleeping with fans for over 18 years now. Even in the winter. At one point I had 3 fans in my room at the same time. All of which were pointing directly at me. And one of them is a high powered industrial fan with a diameter of probably 2 feet, or more.

I think we need to get a bunch of teachers to youtube their fans or something... this myth is stupid. It's funny, but just plain stupid.

On a side note. If a corrupt government needed to kill someone it'd be an easy excuse. Oh the fan did it... case closed.
