Quote:
Women-only subway cars will be reintroduced in Seoul next year as part of the local transportation authority's efforts to crack down on sexual harassment of female passengers, officials said Wednesday.

The Seoul Metro and the Seoul Metropolitan Transit Corp., which operate eight subway lines in the Seoul metropolitan area, said they will designate the cars in 2008 on all of their lines.

"Seoul's subway system first introduced the women-only cars in 1992, but the system was immediately suspended after undergoing some operational problems," an official at the Seoul Metro said.

"This time, two cars of each subway train on all the lines will be designated exclusively for women. There might be some side effects, but the advantages of the cars in terms of crime prevention will surpass the disadvantages. We will work to reduce the negative effects," said the official.

He said the subway operators aim to maximize the convenience of female passengers by providing some amenities in their exclusive cars.

Good idea? Bad idea?

I don't really like the idea. If there's a groping problem, put cameras in the cars and anti-harassment posters up.

Good idea. As much as I'll miss checking out the hotties, no one deserves to get groped (yes, I maintain that looking is fair game).

I wonder what kind of 'amenities' the women-only cars will have? I can think of lots of wisecrack guesses, but I don't think they'd go over too well.

Pointless. Some groper can just wear a wig and hop on the women only car. Chances are, if someone was being groped in a women's only car, everyone in the car would just turn the other way.

Ah crap. That's going to make hitting the stair/escalators for some exits/interchanges worse. For example, Myeong Dong you want to be at the front/end depending on direction. The line 4/6 interchange at samgakji you need to be front/back. Line 4/2 at Dongdaemoon you need to be at the back/front.

This is very embarrassing for me....long a proponent of how soft and safe Korea is.

It's alarming and embarrassing for the country that Seoul should even consider such a venture.

Personally - and please don't call me names if you disagree - my observations tell me women-only cabs are excessive, alarmist and totally unnecessary.

Women will obviously have a choice. The ones that take the mens' cars will be be thought of as promiscuous.

By observations you mean dressing up or living as a woman here in Seoul? Honestly, you're a bright lad, but sometimes your polemics on this board are nought but tripe.

Exactly...instead of teaching men not to be disgusting assholes, let's herd women into seperate cars like cattle because, ya know, it's their fault, really.

can this f'in country come up with original answers to ANYTHING without reverting to stale confucianism? SEGREGATE SEGREGATE SEGREGATE!!!

I'm sure that some will applaud this until twenty years later when they realize that the rest of the modern world has moved on in terms of gender relations and Korea is, once again, stuck in the past.

Sorry if that's coming out harsh but I'm having a baaaddd "korea week" .

I don't see the problem with "segregating". We do it with bathrooms, don't we? Give women the choice, and we will soon see how much of a need for it there is, by how many women choose to use it. I bet ridership from male passengers goes down, from all the ajoshi's who will have to find another way to get their jollies.

You're missing the point even though you just said it; they will simply FIND OTHER WAYS TO GET THEIR JOLLIES. If a person has the will to go groping, they'll just do it elsewhere. This stops nothing.

What makes me angry is that this is a good opportunity for Korea to enlighten women as to how to become more street smart, and how to make men more compassionate.

But no, let's just huddle them away unless "escorted". Burkas next.

Also, on the bathroom thing, those are indeed segregated but many rapes happen in them. Actually, more often than not, if I'm reading about a rape in the paper/online in Korea, they seem to happen *a lot* in bathrooms here. So, you're analogy is pretty false.

You are right though, about letting the market decide. I hope Korean women wise up and decide not to give up freedom for secur...oh hell, I'm talking about Korea. Jus
