Name 3 Heisman winners who played in the CFL?(Hint: not OJ ) |
Does Carson Palmer count? He was a backup QB but dunno if he took a snap in the regular season.
Doug Flutie of course. Ricky Williams.
Dunno who else would be the third if not Palmer.
My fav Roughrider of all time was Ray Elgaard. I nicknamed him "Thor!" Gawd he was good.
(Him and Rocky DiPietro in Hamilton for those who remember the tough-as-a-tank slotbacks) |

Elgaard was a slotback STUD. His only problem was him playing 2 seasons past his prime.
The Heisman winners I was thinking of were: Flutie(duh!), Johnny Rodgers(from Nebraska-played for Montreal in the '70s) and Billy Vessels(played in the '50s).
I didn't know Williams was a Heisman winner! |

I was wondering how in the hell Winnipeg ended up in the Grey Cup against Saskatchewan. Ottawa's a defunct team again. Guess I haven't been keeping track.
Winnipeg's been back and forth between the West and East conferences due to Ottawa being in and out of the league (and Montreal once?). |

Yeah, sure enough, Ricky Williams was indeed a Heisman winner. If he coulda layed of the dope....
For the last 20 yrs., due to franchise changes, the US expansion experiment, yada, yada, ...Winnipeg has been the yo-yo franchise, going from "East'' to "West" and back again.... |

Warren Moon. Was he a heismna winner? Well, considering how he is one of the best ever NFL QBs it doesnt mattr if he ever won the Heismann. |

Moon never won a Heisman but he kicked ass in Canada(often at the expense of the Riders ) and was no slouch w/ Seattle and Minnesota either. |

I would have said Joe Thiesmann, but he was runner up.
The Roughriders vs the Rough Riders.
When the CFL was expanding south of the border, (remember the Las Vegas Posse?). A group from San Antonio wanted a team and they would call themselves the San Antonio Rough Riders.
the CFL said "Can't do it"
San Antonio "Why not, is there already a team named the Rough Riders?"
the CFL "yes, two."
I lived in Ottawa and went to several Rough Rider games. I always cheered for the home team unless of course the Roughriders were playing.
I never sat in the north side of the stadium.
Why not you ask?
Cause, NORTH SIDE SUCKS, NORTH SIDE SUCKS.
Those were the days. |

That's funny, because the first game I ever went to was in Ottawa in 1985 against Saskatchewan. I remember that there were no injuries in the game.
The only other game I went to was in 1986, I think. BC Lions and Winnipeg (can't quite remember). I think it was the first game of the season. One thing I remember is that Swervin' Mervin punted at least once. Don't know why. I think maybe the punter was injured. Strange. He was the best receiver in the game then (I think). I went with my dad and had one of those tall cups of beer. I was 17. |

Ah, ''Swervin' " Mervyn Fernandez. Versatile and exciting player...reminded me of Johnny Rodgers back in the day. In the old days teams had only a 32 man roster so the more versatile you were, the more valuable you were.
In the '60s & '70s the Riders had a guy named Al Ford(American). In one game he would sometimes be: tight end, def. back, punter, punt/KO returner. Later became GM of the Riders, winning the 1989 Cup. |
