I'm thinking of buying a second-hand scooter.

Does anybody know whether or not I need to get insurance or other documents ?

thanks.

If it's 50cc's or less no license or insurance is needed. Anything above that and you will need both license and insurance.

You know, I have always wanted to buy one of those bad boys, but isn't there a stigma about using one. I mean I never see Kim soju bottle talking one to and from work, or out in the countryside enjoying some fresh air. They seem to be use most by deliverly dudes, delivering food or chicks. Maybe I shouldn't care, but Korea has made me very self conscious about the way things appear. That said, don't listen to me. I have known others who have used one, and they liked it. Smile

I use a scooter to commute to work.

I live about 10Km from my office in Seoul and it takes me about 20mins to get to work. Of course if the weather is bad, either way, I cab it.

If I used Public Transport it would take 45 mins and I really do find the drive relaxing.

I have a A.T.S. which is 50cc and is comfortable and safe enough for me.

If you have any specific questions just ask.

IMHO you do not need a licence or insurance for anything less than 100cc not 50cc.

Good Luck

I'm buy a motorbike in mid-March (a racing model design). The store said that on engine sizes 125cc or less, all that is needed is a car driving licence. Larger than that and you need to take a Korean road test for a motorbike licence.

Insurance and registration cost 120,000 Won or so.

What kind of bike are you getting?

Though mine will be a white body with an after market black engine cover and some other kit work. Then I'll do up a custom decal job. 1.5M Won.

What does the 125+ cc insurance cover? I was told that if you get in an accident on a scooter you are not covered by your medical insurance. Is that true? Is it the same for 125+cc bikes?

I had a scooter for my 2nd and 3rd year in Korea. I can't tell you how much it helped me deal with the subway blues, the crowds and traffic. I didn't know seoul intimately until I got the bike.

If I get a 125cc scooter (or smaller) where would I park it? Just at the curb.

That said, question 2 is where do you park when you go places?

At the curb.

And pray it doesn't get stolen.

So how many CCs is the maximum you're allowed to ride without insurance/registration?

How much is insurance for something small (if it's required, then I'm thinking 125CC-ish)...I'm 29 with 10+ years of accident-free driving, if that matters.

Are you allowed to ride your scooter outside of city limits (ie: can I ride one from Changwon to Busan or to nearby cities?)

Look on Craigslist South Korea under the "Buy/Sell" "Motorcycle heading or here on Dave's ESL. I just quickly perused these sites and they both had 50cc scooters for 700,000 and under.
