These little parties have become a weekly event at Dragon bar. I've not personally attended, but friends say it's worth a look (for pre-Hongdae excitement?)

Darn. Link didn't work. Anyway...It's a DJ party at Dragon bar on Sat. night near Nowon St. (probably not worth travelling for, but for those in the Nowon area...)

I saw the shout-out in the Herald. They mentioned Dragon Bar as being a "British-style" pub. Hardly. It's one of those ubiquitous "Western-style" pubs you find in Korea. They certainly aren't serving any good beer on tap.

Here's the lowdown on Dragon Bar. In Nowon-gu, particularly around Nowon station, this is the bar where ex-pats chill after the daily hogwon grind. You're likely to see a) large groups of foreigners consisting mainly of unapproachable hogwon cliques b) groups of 2 to 3 single men prowling for the elusive, way-guk seeking "hot Korean chick" c) a handful of comely Korean women mostly concerning themselves with drinking and the bartenders d) 1 or 2 really good looking Korean women mostly concerning themsleves with drinking, the bartenders, or their Korean male escorts.

The owner of the bar (Can you guess his name?), once worked at a hotel in Guam, where apparently they taught bartenders how to put on a cocktail show, but failed to teach the fine art of mixology (read: drinks are either too strong, too weak, or just dag-nasty). The cocktail show at Dragon Bar seemingly manifests itself every half hour or so. You will be impressed neither by the obnoxiously loud music (can't hear yourself think) nor the untalented mooks dropping bottles all over the floor. But that's not the real problem. The real problem lies in the fact that you cannot order drinks at this time, and the show goes on forever.

I should have mentioned earlier that when you approach the "available" women (read: attractive Korean females) you can be sure to have your moxie ruined by the bartenders, who move in like vultures to crap all over your scene. Without fail.

Long story short:
I don't know why foreigners chose this joint to hang their hats. It's dull. The drinks (including beer) are overpriced and not well-made, and most of the clientel (way-guks included) are essentially in their own little worlds.

mack dude,
you brought this up. why the sudden hard feelings for the dragon bar? i've been once or twice, and it seemed like a nice enough place to me. in your first post, you said you hadn't even ever been there. that was two days ago. now you've got the whole scoop for us. what gives?

okay... correction... you didn't say you've never been there. you just said you hadn't attended one of these parties. sorry bout that. but still, your first post seemed pretty curious and open to the place, and then your second post was totally trashing it. i don't get it. is this one of those coffeecup 'i went there once and didn't score' kind of things?
no offense, coffeecup, i still want to hang with you, man!

Incisive observation, endofthewor1d,

Indeed, why should I plug a party at a bar which I basically loathe? Same reason I plug Korea (for which I also have a love/hate affinity) to would-be teachers, I suppose. Call it "self-indulgent, masochistic curiousity." I want to gather evidence which either substantiates my position(s), or invalidates it/them.

Well, I was there on Saturday. Was dragged their by a drunk friend of mine who'd spent the day at 3 Alleys drinking and watching the Rugby World Cup.

Anyway, the turnout was pretty impressive, looked like most people had a good time, though around 1 a.m. it turned into a bit of a sausage party.

As for me, I was too sober to really appreciate the goings on, but one highlight was hot chics dancing on the bar and getting sprayed down with water.

Also, I actually drink in Dragon Bar from time to time as I worked in Nowon last year. It's not the greatest place in the world, but as mentioned, it is the place for foreigners to drink in Nowon. And enough of my ex-coworkers and their friends drink there that it isn't that hard to show up and meet people to hang out with, of course, your mileage may vary.

And finally, if anyone knows of decent foreigner-frequented watering hole near the bank junction in Jungye, feel free to give me a shout. My current drinking buddy and I hang out at Miller Time and occasionally see guys from one of the other local hagwons, but that's about it for drinking in the area.

Thunndarr,

Did you lift your monniker from the "Herculoids?"

I've seen "Miller Time". From the outside it looks like a decent-sized sports bar, but I just know there ain't gonna be any big screens showing anything even remotely associated with sports. Correct? And they probably don't even serve Miller on tap! Laughing

You're close, it's from an early 80's cartoon called Thunndarr the Barbarian.

Miller Time has no Miller Beer on tap, which I'm sure you don't find surprising. And no big screens either.

BUT....the music is actually pretty decent, they play a wide range of stuff, and the beer is fairly cheap. Pluse you can get 1 liter mugs of beer there.

I've never seen it really busy, but it's still a decent place to go for a couple of hours after work.

I remember Thunndarr! The name, that is. Not the cartoons...Wasn't he a spin-off of the "Herculoids", or vice-versa?

I'd agree that Dragon bar's nothing special. I lived around that area for about a year and I could count on one hand the number of times I went. It's true that most people you'd see there are clique-ish - after a while, I just gave up trying to mingle with anyone.
There used to be a better bar near there, and it also had a pool table, which was great because I love pool. But about a year and half ago or so, there was an incident between management and some of the foreigners and expats weren't really welcomed much after that. I would go just for the free pool, but no one goes there anymore and I don't live in the city anymore.
So, I don't think Dragon bar is worth making a trip up there. But I don't know of any better bars around...
