Hi folks,

Just wondering if there's a standardised national language test of some kind for Korean? I've heard of a hanja test of some kind, but any other info would be appreciated.

Anybody have a link?

There is a test, but I"m not sure when it is administered. You can buy previous tests to practice on. I've seen them at Kyobo.

The last test was administered in September. I'm not sure of the times and locations of 2003 tests but in 2002 they were held at Seoul National University of Education, Pusan National University, Chonam National University and Chungnm National University.

There are two portions to the test. Vocabulary, Grammar and Writing and Listening and Reading. Each portion is one hour and thirty minutes in length.

There are six levels.

The test is called the ?th Korean Proficiency Test. Shocked

It's run by an organization called KICE (Korean Curriculum Evaluation Body) and is called the Korean language proficiency test.

Thanks for the info.

Gladiator, I can't view the link you provided, for some reason the page won't display. Odd.

Anyhoo, thanks again. Has anybody tried this test? I remember someone on the board was going to take a Hanja test of some kind.

I tried a Korean test some time ago but it wasn't the one you can buy books for in Kyobo. Everyone takes the same test and you get a level after they grade you. It wasn't a good test and the exam given by the other organisation looks much better.
I took the level 8 hanja test (the lowest level) a couple years ago. I was in a test room with a bunch of grade 2 students and felt very, very silly. I might take it again later but not until I feel confident enough to write an exam where the test takers are high school or university students. Still, I passed and got my little certificate. Smile

I'm going to look into the KICE test, but I think I'll end up trying to find an institute program that has a decent placement test to see where I'm "at". I took a placement test at Seoul National's Korean langauge institute (for foreigners) long time ago. It was pretty basic, seems like there were four levels with the fourth level requiring basic hanja. Hopefully their testing is a little more "diagnostic" nowadays.
