I'll grant that the KT isn't very good, and that we're much much better off turning to blogs than to the mainstream press here, but it's one of the few English-language papers we have. Anybody who has read an article over there has found scores of flaming, race-baiting, hateful comments on the bottom of each page. They recently put up a warning that says such language will not be tolerated, but nothing has really changed. For anybody interested, the webmaster's address is:
[email protected]
if you want to fire an email on over there. I did, saying that I think comments need to be disabled completely. |

Ironic that they want to tone down the way people speak there because when they posted an article about the suicide of a relative of the owner of the Hyundai corporation a few years back, they completely erased all comments and asked readers to "respect the family of the deceased"....it has been running amuck for years unabated...kinda' like some of the threads here are turning out to be...... |

How a newspaper can allow the garbage that is printed in the comments section to continue is beyond me. Over time, it has just gotten uglier what people say. A lot of those people aren't even in Korea I am sure, but they still make life difficult for those of us who are. I say disable the comments feature entirely. If someone wants to editorialize, they can start their own newspaper. |

Agreed. At the very least, actually moderate the posts--deleting and banning where necessary if they really want to keep this feature. Personally, I think it's a good idea for people to respond and give their opinions and concerns etc. but if it becomes a travesty like it has and they are incapable of moderating, then simply drop it altogether because it has been hopelessly hijacked by those who are unable to take the highroad. |

Just go through any article on that site. Like I said they cleaned up a lot of the racist stuff in the past two days, so the comments on news articles came within the past day or so. Older articles haven't had their comments purged yet. I dodged the swear filter a little to give you an accurate idea of what's being said, so please don't ban me again.
From an opinion piece about Namdaemun:
Quote: |
Its becuase korea love to protect old drunk gook ajeossi. Stupid gook custom. Age doesn't mean *beep*. If Korea was like any other civilized decent country, this gook would be in jail until death. |
Quote: |
t is because the filthymexicantroll is a cowardly gay fagggot with inferiority complexes towards whites and asians. |
From the article about another Korean professor accussed of plagiarism.
Quote: |
yes I just made your bimbo of a mother cum on herself LOSER! |
Quote: |
pedro should be dressed like a schoolgirl and sent to japan for prostitution. |
Quote: |
ultrakorean should be EXTERMINATED with those extreme BLACK MUSLUMS who hate on AMERICA! |
Quote: |
mexicans are byuntaes race. they not only abuse their children but they sell them to foreigners. pedro experienced it during his childhood. |
From an article about North Korea derailing the 6-party talks
Quote: |
KOREANS should ALL be EXTERMINATED IN THE MOTHERLAND! HAHAHAHAHAHA |
From an article about non-Koreans in teaching positions:
Quote: |
There is a sole purpose in which our Korean comrade KJI is feverishly working on his clandestine nuclear weapons. Yes, to achieve the complete removal of the AIDS spreaders, the filthy monkey tailed Japs in the *beep* island, Japan. Americans did not finish the work. Now, our Korean comrade KJI and his army together with S. Koreans are ready to complete the mission. I can?셳 wait to see the monkey tailed Japs running scared like frightened monkeys under the fiery scorching mushroom clouds again. |
Quote: |
Seriously, Bar-B-Qed gooksrugly and the monkey tailed Japs will be something to be entertained by when they finally get what they have wished for, the NK nuke hell fire. Hehehehe. |
Quote: |
The monkey tailed stupid japs like gooksrugly are not only the sub-forms of their ape cousins, the snow monkeys but also the lowest forms of cyber parasites. They just don't possess enough intelligence to develop their own internet sites to latch on. Consequently, they are here to suck off on the Korean flavor injectors here. |
Quote: |
Monkey see, monkey do. Grugly has to copy my original thoughts in every post. See, this is why whitey chimps like him are spit on by blacks, Asians and His,panics all over the world. Your momma shave her nipples yet? If so, let me know and I'll let her suck my d1ck for $5 in addition to all the other relatives' d1cks she has sucked since working as a *beep* in West Virginia. White b1tches are fat, hairy disgusting pieces of trash. |
From an article about recent disasters in Korea and CHina:
Quote: |
Lol are saying chinese elevate other ethnicities above themselves? If that's so, I think they are trying to embellish their ugly pig faces using other ethnicities. Not just that chinese are pretty aware that Koreans have some arab blood in them so they are trying to imitate us. Even their nationalism is copied from Koreans that many times we think it's childish. |

Ah, the Korean Times' comments section sure brings out the warm and fuzzy nature of people.
It's long past time they put a stop to that. I'm surprised there haven't been any fights in the street because of those comment.
While I don't believe in stopping comments, I believe the site should permaban the repeat offenders and IP block them as well. If the flamers want to continue their war, they can take it to Craigslist. |

Free Speech? If you want to speak freely, you can always start your own blog. However, when posting comments on the website of a publicly or privately held company you have no right to freedom of speech (especially when the company involved is a South Korean one). If they dont like what you are saying, they have every right to show you to the door. The recent actions taken by the Korea Times to rid their website of a bunch of children and their version of free speech is long over due. If the garbage people were posting on that website is what free speech has evolved into, then god help us all. |

Dude, you are a serious party member. It is people like you
who, if they have their way, will ensure people have to log-in
with a special number to use the net.
What is it with some of the people that post on this site? What
is this the Vatican homepage? The Taliban Blog? The Republican
Party website? The Saudi Morality Police Chat Room? |

Time to sit down and tune your concept of "free speech" into reality (or at least upgrade it from the college freshman level it currently resides at). I am sure you believe the world would be a wonderful place if you could say whatever you want wherever you want. Unfortunately, 99.9% of the people in the world disagree with you. Try to walk into my house in the US (or any home in the world where people have access to a gun...or butter knife) and express your freedom of speech without being first granted the privilege to do so by the property owner. You will be shot dead before your first free word leaves your tongue.
There are rights in this world that trump the right to free speech hands down. If the Korea Times does not want to grant you the privilege (it is not your right) to access their website or allow you to comment on their website it is their right to deny that privilege to you. |

If truth be told Korean netiziens are just as bad. In a way this is the sad face of the internet where people with no life to speak of just sit infront of a screen all day typing this type of drivel which happens in many countries. On another level when you see the way a lot of people are treated in this country the nature of these comments doesnt really surprise me a great deal. |

It should also be noted that this is a privately owned and operated site which is tied to an enterprise; Therefore posting here is a privilege rather than a constitutional 'right' to free speech and freedom of expression. This is from the forum guidelines for this site. You might want to forward your message to Dave if you feel this way. You might have to tweak the "if you don't like it..." part. |
