So, this is somewhat of a random post, but I was just thinking about it last night.

How do Koreans feel about body hair on women? Let me back up . . . I'm a bit of a hippie. Okay, a big time hippie. And I don't shave. What do you suppose the reaction will be (I leave for the Seoul area in about six weeks)? Will I be stuck wearing pants and sleeved-tops all the time?

Thanks in advance!

(and p.s.- if you have something shitty to say about body hair on women, you can just keep it to yourself)

You'll probably be fine with unshaven legs, though I'd recommend sleeved tops most of the time. Many Koreans find bare shoulders to be quite revealing, though oddly, chicks wearing microminis in February don't seem to phase them

Korean women are a pretty un-hairy lot, so the whole shaving thing doesn't come up much (in casual life), as it would in a caucasian country.
Just let 'er rip dude, nobody's gonna fire you. If you're teaching kids thouhg they might try to pluck a bit of it for the sheer novelty.

I honestly don't think anyone will hold it against you, but they will stare at you no matter what because you're a foreigner. Wearing shorts or pants, you're going to have people looking at you. Very Happy

But, BOY will you ever be the topic of hushed and not-so-hushed gossip at the local 목욕탕. And that's not even counting them talking about your tatas and hoohoo.

i have had a number of k-girlfriends and one thing they do not seem to do is shave "down there". i know some do, but i think they have to watch western porn before they would even consider it.

My last gf DESPERATELY wanted to get shaved or waxed, but she adamantly refused to do so because she goes to the local suana with her mom and aunts and grandma every couple weeks or so, and "they would think I'm 변태".

Yeah, I've seen a few programs where the running gag is that it's an Asian woman at a beauty salon and she is mortified by the hairiness of Western women down there. I never understood how the Asian actresses reconciled that with themselves.

I'm surprised that this thread has gotten so far without somebody sarcastically announcing, "Hooray! Another slovenly white hippie girl in Korea!" I'm proud of you guys' maturity.

As I mentioned in "Bikini wax" thread...

Quote:
[...]While reading "Religion and Ritual in Korean Society" by Kendall and Dix (eds.) I learned something that might partially explain the lack of "shaved option" in Korea. In page 162: "A long-held belief among Koreans [...] is that it brings a man three years of bad luck to have intercourse with a woman who lacks pubic hair."

There is also a mention of a young woman who had not told to her fiance that she did not have pubic hair. Because of this she was afraid that her marriage would be ruined from the beginning and considered, I kid you not, pubic hair transplant!

I once dated a girl who shaved the hair off her upper lip but didn't feel it necessary to shave her legs.

If you're a bush man like me, then Korea is hirsuite heaven....

I have hairy arms and legs, and I got stared at quite a bit, and I'm a guy. Being that you're a woman, I could see how you would really get stared at and probably made fun of, too. If you have thick skin, bare it, sister. If you're self-conscious about it, cover up.
