Well I'm officially booked now..

Bought a 3-month open ticket, but as of now I'm only staying 5 weeks...

So my question is .. what kind of schedule do you recommend I take? (Since I still have no real set plan)

The only think I have assured is that I'll fly into Sydney and fly out of Cairns.. so that will atleast force me to see parts of the East Coast (which as of now is what I'm going to focus on)

I've sort of concluded that I won't bother with the West Coast or the Outback.. but is there anything there that you Aussie "vets" recommend that I MUST see?

Any and all advice is appreciated...

I was contemplating visiting that 3rd-place-Rubgy-nation of yours as well for a short stopover during my trip... any recommendations?

Sarcasm, it'll depend on your budget, and it depends on whether or not you wish to see the natural attractions of Australia. Hrm, come to think of it, there isn't much else down here... :)

Take a few days to go to Victoria and check out the Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Drive. Uluru (aka Ayres Rock) in the centre of the country is worth a visit. Take time to visit the sleepy capital of the nation, Canberra, as there are some things you might want to see, like the War Memorial and the Parliament (if you're running out of things to do).

Sydney is a good base of operations, as you can hit the Northern Beaches (yummy in summer), travel the usual tourist haunts like Bondi and South head, then head into the city for some nightlife. A warning that Sydney pretty much dies in the arse after 9pm on weekdays. The weekends are totally on fire though, so hitting some of the popular bars is a good idea.

The Blue Mountains to the west of Sydney, you can spend a good day here, leave early enough and check out all the major tourist haunts, like the 3 Sisters and maybe take the cable car if you're feeling lucky. There used to be a scary as hell roller coaster along here, but it was decommissioned because of the obvious dangers. :)

On the way to Canberra, you could take a detour at the Snowy Mountains, and take a summer hike up to the highest peak in Australia, Mt Kosciusko. Bring up a jacket since it's sunny but quite cool.

There are quite a few things to do, what I'd recommend is when you're in Sydney, is to go Central Station and check out all the tourism centres along Eddy Avenue. It's a great location since all the coaches and inter/intrastate trains leave from here and hence is a one-stop shop for all your Australian touristy needs.

If you like going for walks and doing outdoor adventure stuff i would reccomend that you stay a few days in the blue mountains. Lots to do there. If you like outdoor adventure stuff tell me and I can recomend some activities and a good company that does tours. As well as a decent hostel.

Spend one week in Tassie. Tasmania. Catch the ferry from Melbourne (12 hours). Hire a car/bike (Rent-A-bomb" hire VWs cheaply) and take a week to drive around the state. Especially the east coast.

Forget about visiting the nations capital Canberra, the city where people are known to hyperventilate in excitement at watching the grass grow....
Good place to buy fireworks and cheap porn though......


Byron Bay (north coast New South Wales) is pretty cruisy (full of hairy armpitted (even the females) ferals however. Good place to do some shark diving if you SCUBA.

Gold Coast is crap. Too many kiwis.........

Maybe not the best time of year to be going to Cairns but its still good.
Into fishing? Charter a boat from Cairns and chase some decent marlin....

forget tassie. Defintly go to melbourne and sydney. Maybe fly into melbourne and make your way up the east coast to Brisbane

What about the great barrier reef? up near cairns, noosa is great, surfers totally sucks. don't go there.

I enjoyed the west coast... especially coral bay. It has an extensive reef that some consider superior to the Great barrier reef because it's unspoilt.
however as you're opting out on that, i reccomend hiring a car and doing a long cruise into the outback desert. exhilirating: the scenery, the heat, the isolation.
melbournes a great place- very happening and friendly...

Whatever you do, avoid taking any sort of tour in a microlight. I discovered last week that a former good friend of mine died in one a couple of months ago. they are unsafe and, accident prone. i was devastated by the news....

I heard from a reliable source that tassie is tauranga of australia. Ie. lots of white trash and old people. You can of course refute that if you feel the need.

Tassie is bloody brill ... about 80% of the state is world heritage listed. Can't get more scenic and historical anywhere else in Oz (from Port Arthur to Cradle Mountain). Cairns is shite this time of year... can't swim in the ocean because of the deadly sea creatures I recommend a few days in my home town Melbourne & the Great Ocean Road, Sydney & the snowy mountains, the northern NSW coast (Byron etc.) Gold Coast is also a lot of fun, but full of "schoolies" Dec/Jan... it's a whole other dimension of Australian life. Wow, 5 weeks - I'm jealous!
