Help. I need a place to rent. I have done some research and am familiar with the chonse system. Ya, like I have $50 to $70 grand just lying around. Can anyone give me any info on where I could find places that require minimal key deposit even if it means paying higher monthly rent? Cheers everyone.

look into your local goshiwons for starters. they usually don't ask for key mone but some can be pretty dire. mine is ok though. my own shower but shared toilet. small room but there is only one of me so how much space do i need!

Thanks again rats...but wtf is a goshiwon? Sorry but I'm obviously a newbie to Korea. BTW what team is that on your avatar? I have worked with a lot of people from the UK so I know how "passionate" they can be about their footy. Cheers again for the help.

If you want a private apartment, just walk into any realtor. There is one pretty much on every block. They have signs and pictures of apartments in the window.

He said he doesn't have key money so that won't help much. A hasuk (boarding house) runs about 300-400/month and includes 2 meals. I lived in one for a year and it was good - the food too. ONly problem I had was when I had 70+ CD's stolen.

A small (re: tiny) apartment can be had for 3,000,000 - 5,000,000 key money and rent ranging from 200,000-500,000 a month. Bring a KOrean friend for help.

Check again, he didn't say that at all. He said he didn't have the money for a chunsae, but he does mention he has money for a key deposit.

footie team is liverpool.

goshiwon is like a group of rooms on a corridoor and you usually share facilities with them. i.e. share a kitchen and toilet, though some do have their private facilities. no key money required usually. the people who usually go there are students (lots of goshiwons near unis) and young people who work every hour they can in order to save up the key money for a better place. mine like a ghost goshiwon - really quiet.

Actually, I do have some money for a key deposit but am kinda leery about leaving it as a deposit as it would constitute a majority of my savings Crying or Very sad. I just don't feel all that comfortable leaving this money on deposit that's all. Thanks for all the help for those that responded. If I ever hook up with any of you, I'll get the beers. By the way rats, "I'm walking all alone" and am thousands of miles away from Ansfield. BTW I'm not really a footy fan but I do hate Man U. Well maybe not the team but the fans...for the Canadian equivalent it's like hating the Habs or the Leafs. I'm prepared for the flames from all the Canadians out there. Cheers all thanks for all the helpful info.

apartments run minimum for chunsae 40-50 mil plus 500 or more per month. He said he wanted an apartment. thus he can't get one. A villa or jutaek is much cheaper and in his range.

Officetels fall under "apartments" to someone who just got off the plane. Key deposit can be had for 5 million for a new building.

Villas too fall under "apartments" to someone who just got off the plane. Key deposit can be no more than prepaying the rent is some cases.

Ok...just to clear the air. I would like either an apartment or bachelor pad or any other place that I can have some privacy (and own bathroom hopefully) and live with my (soon to be) girlfriend in peace. BTW where can I find listings for these new officetels? Or listings in general for that matter. The "Seoul Classified" I picked up seems to be short on listings. Like I said before I'm kinda leery about leaving the bulk of my savings for a key deposit before I actually get a job. Thanks again guys and sorry for any misunderstandings.

Your question about officetel listings is a good and pertinent one. When answered, it should definitely become a sticky, as you are not the first, nor will you be the last, to ask this question.

If you give us an idea of where you might be living, I am sure someone can point you in the right direction. For instance, if you will be living in Gangnam, there are quite a few officetels. Missi officetel in Daechi-dong, for instance. Also, a bunch of new officetels just went up in Yangjae-dong. Mok-dong is officetel heaven, especially near the new Hyundai Dept. store.

If you put down 5mil key money, expect to pay at least 500 per month rent (plus your maintenance bills [not including all other bills] will be at least 150,000...maintenance bills are notoriously high at officetels). A buddy of mine rented a room at an officetel in Mok-dong. Clean place, but small. Key money, 5mil. Rent 700 per.

There are very few bargains in this country with regards to housing. Unless you are willing to share a room with someone in the Itaewon area.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record pimping my own posts, I wrote up a lengthy post about the subject here recently, which may be of some use.
