Is there a thread on this website or is there another website that lists all the hagwons that are blacklisted? I tried searching but the search function on that site isn't so great.
Thanks!
edit: if a thread does exist, it should be a sticky |

The main problem with creating a thread that blacklist hagwons in Korea is that it is illegal. I would love to warn everyone about my hagwon but I am worried they will find out it is me since I am the only foreign this school has had in 3 years. It wouldnt be hard for them to figure out who blacklisted them. Basically they can blacklist you but you can't blacklist them, welcome to Korea. |

Rule of Thumb:
to save you trouble searching Dave's and other ESL sites,
stay away from
1) kindergarten hagwons . (period)
these include, but are not limited to:
-Wonderland (everyone smiles in Wonderland, except the foreign teachers)
-Kid's Club
2) Adult hagwons
-pagoda
-ybm adult
other than these, hagwons are hit and miss. Even though there are a few hundred crappy GnBs in Korea, there are probably a few good ones.
But, ALL Kindy Kid's Clubs and Wonderlands and ALL Adult YBMs and Pagodas are crap because of the split shifts.
Then you get into the Wonderlands that do not provide NHI and pension and the adult YBMs that do not provide housing (but lure the unsuspecting with misadvertisments)
Anyway, No, there is not a blacklist. Just friends telling friends. But the above mentioned are the constants; YBM adult, Pagoda-adult, Wonderland and Kid's Club.....
if you have a bad experience with a specific hagwon, post it here.
Hopefully, the next potential victim will do a search on the hagwon name before they make a mistake.
I did that with my first hagwon. Then I met the 'new employees'. They were bitchin at a local bar. I asked them why the F they didn't search Daves! They said they were in too much of a rush and didn't think of it. One of them did a runner 3 months in. The other is still bitching at the bar...... at least I tried..... |

GnB's are probably hit-or-miss. I had two friends who worked at two different ones, and they had really easy, short jobs. One guy worked four hours a day. Another friend worked five hours a day, and only two-and-a-half hours on Fridays. |

There's also this site: http://www.teflwatch.com/
There used to be a hagwan checklist site, but I can't find it lately. |

This list has not been updated for 3 years and I know first-hand that one claim is completely bogus (teacher was fired for being drunk at school and than wanted severance pay). |

Do all jobs teaching adults require split shifts (besides unis and wall street)? Seems like most of them do. |

Funny, I just checked it and it has posts from 2008 right at the top.
I think you guys must be looking at an old site or something.
Here's how to find the new one, google "korea blacklist" .
When the page comes up go to the 2nd. seamonkey site listed.
seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~jonb/intro_warning.html
When that opens it will tell you that the site is outdated or something, but there is a link to the new site. Click on that link. This will take you to Tokyo John's home page with links to the updated Korean blacklist.
As other posters have noted, don't believe everything you read, but if a school has multiple complaints about it....
Here's another site;(but mostly China/Taiwan schools)

The webpage begins with a blacklisting dated Wednesday, August 27, 2008, try this url and scroll down the page: http://blacklist.tokyojon.com/
There is also a "contact" link so that you may report your hagwon.... |

Actually no it is not illegal to create a blacklist. If someone sees it and decides to kick up a fuss then they can press libel charges against you. But the police are not going to come and arrest you for that. |

The idea that it would be illegal to say something bad about hagwons on a blacklist website strikes me as bogus.
There is all kinds of information on the internet and policing it seems to be mission impossible. |
