Right about Hongik and, as Rockwell said, SNU is finished. They told me we'd find out in two weeks but I got an email from them Weds afternoon. |

They contacted you so early. I am presuming that they offered you the position? |

How long are they giving at SNU for you to decide whether you want the job or not? |

appears from what i'm hearing there is a glut of ma tesols out there looking plus the bunch that were hired at hongik (40 odd) 4 years ago are out there looking as they have a 4 year limit. |
And there will be a fairly large number of people every year or so leaving Hongik, as Tiger said. We saw this during the hiring period this year -- everyone hired has experience teaching at unis. This was not always the case in previous years.
The good news is that if so many people left Hongik, then a lot of people can stand a chance at getting a job filling those open spots.
Yes, there are indeed a glut of 8-month MA's from a certain school down under that has no scruples about lowering standards to make a buck.
I hope that people who have influence on school hiring groups make this point clear to Koreans doing the hiring. |
I was going to point out, that I would wager over 50% of those with MA-TOEFLs in Korea have ones they got online or through schools with lower standards.
The programs that I looked into in Canada are 1 full year to 2 full years |

I work at SNU.
What department was hiring? Was it at Seoul Nat. Univ. of Educ?
I can't recall which department, but a part-time coworker of mine applied for the other department and was runner-up I guess. That happened on Wednesday I believe.
Hongik is posting interview candidates first week of December. |

Are there any advantages of being a uni teacher, not uniwon, besides the long vacation times?
I mean I work for a company now teach 12 hours a week, have to be there 25 hours a week, no extra duties, just "office hours" and prep time. I make well over any salary I've ever seen advertised by a uni.
Just wondering why everyone seems to envy uni jobs? |

I was talking about Seoul National University. Someone wrote that they had heard from them Wednesday.
Apparently they're supposed to be hiring 7 people. |

You can't be talking about the SNU unigwon job though.
They aren't hiring. |

jdpatlanta,
You say you make well over any advertised uni job and that you work 12 hours a week for a hagwon.
Care to post your hourly or monthly salary? I'm really curious about this since you're the first person I've read about on Dave's to say something like this.
To be honest I find that somewhat hard to believe. |

Read his post again. it says:

Since you asked so nicely,
I am required to be present at my company from 1:30 pm until 6:30 pm. Most days I actually leave between 6:30 and 7:00. I am sometimes asked to stay a little later, maybe twice a month.
For this I am paid about 4 million a month plus bonuses.
Just so you know it took me a hell of a long time to get this job and I had to fight for it pretty hard, but I think it was worth it. |
