A new pact has been signed between Ireland and South Korea to protect workers' pension rights.

Similar social security agreements are already in place between Ireland and the US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin said the deal will enable people who have paid social insurance in both Ireland and Korea to receive full pension entitlements.

This is why everyone should make sure their school is paying into the pension. You never know when a new treaty will be signed between South Korea and your native country.

It is talking about the agreements between Ireland and other countries, hence it says:

Similar social security agreements are already in place between Ireland and the US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

The article doesn't state what the agreement is. It doesn't say that pension contributions are refundable. It may just be that the pension funds may be transferable, as is already the case for the UK, for example. A UK citizen can have his Korean contributions transferred as National Insurance contributions, but cannot take a lump-sum payment. The Irish agreement might be the same. The article didn't make it clear.

I have just e-mailed the department of social and family affairs in Ireland to see if it allows for teachers who previously worked in Korea to claim back any money owed to them. It would be sweet if they did cos I am owed almost 3 million and so is my g.f

I will let you know of any response i recieve.

I love mary hanafin even more now.....I interviewed her for a project for my honours degree and it helped me get a much higher mark than it merited,,,,,now she might be giving me a ball of money i didn't expect Very Happy Very Happy hopefully it's not the same as the U.K one, but even if it is, at least it's some sort of a contribution for when i retire, even though i'm only 24

New Zealand has recieved the paperwork about the pension agreement and is expect to go ahead with it this year. As Australia just did it last year. So NZers should be covered by it - keep a copy of your alien number and pension reciept to claim in the future.
